Body Orientation & Anatomical Position

Anatomical Position

The anatomical position is the standard reference posture used to describe locations and directions on the human body. In this position, the body stands upright, feet shoulder-width apart, arms at the sides, and palms facing forward. The head and eyes are directed straight ahead. This position provides a consistent frame of reference for anatomical terminology.

Directional Terms

Directional terms are used to describe the locations of structures or the direction of movements relative to the body or another structure. These terms are essential for clear communication in anatomy.

  • Anterior (ventral): Toward the front of the body (e.g., the esophagus is anterior to the spinal cord).

  • Posterior (dorsal): Toward the back of the body.

  • Superior (cranial): Toward the head.

  • Inferior (caudal): Toward the feet or tail.

  • Proximal: Closer to the point of origin (usually the trunk).

  • Distal: Farther from the point of origin.

  • Medial: Closer to the midline of the body.

Anatomical Planes and Sections

Anatomical planes are imaginary lines that divide the body into sections. These planes are used to describe locations, directions, and to make cross-sectional images for study.

The abdominopelvic cavity is divided into four quadrants to help locate organs and describe pain or injury. The quadrants are:
