Anatomy and physiology are foundational sciences in understanding the human body. Anatomy is the study of body structures, while physiology focuses on how these structures function. The relationship between structure and function is a central concept in biology: the form of a body part is closely related to its job.

Language of Anatomy

Anatomical Position

The anatomical position is a standardized posture used as a reference in describing the location and relation of body parts. In this position, the body stands upright, facing forward, with arms at the sides and palms facing forward. This position ensures consistency in anatomical terminology.

Directional Terms

Directional terms are used to describe the locations of structures relative to other structures or locations in the body. These terms are essential for clear communication in anatomy.

Inferior (caudal)

Posterior (dorsal)

Proximal

Regional Terms

Regional terms specify distinct areas within major body divisions. The body is divided into two main regions: the axial region (head, neck, trunk) and the appendicular region (limbs).

  • Axial region: Head (cephalic), neck (cervical), trunk (thoracic, abdominal, pelvic).

  • Appendicular region: Upper and lower limbs.

Nine Abdominal Regions

Body Planes and Sections

Major Body Planes

Body planes are imaginary lines used to divide the body into sections for anatomical study and medical imaging. The three main planes are:

  • Frontal (coronal) plane: Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.

  • Sagittal plane: Divides the body into right and left parts. The midsagittal (median) plane divides it into equal halves.

  • Transverse (horizontal) plane: Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts.

Body planes are used to interpret medical images such as X-rays and MRIs. For example, a sagittal section shows a side view, while a transverse section shows a cross-section.

Body Cavities

Main Body Cavities
