The Human Body: An Orientation

Anatomical Position and Directional Terms

The anatomical position is a standardized posture used to describe the locations and relationships of body parts. In this position, the body stands erect, feet slightly apart, with palms facing forward and thumbs pointing away from the body. All directional terms are based on this position, regardless of the actual position of the body.

  • Right and left always refer to the subject's right and left, not the observer's.

  • Directional terms are used to describe the location of one body structure relative to another.

Key Directional Terms

  • Superior (cranial): Toward the head or upper part of a structure.

  • Inferior (caudal): Away from the head or toward the lower part of a structure.

  • Anterior (ventral): Toward the front of the body.

  • Posterior (dorsal): Toward the back of the body.

  • Medial: Toward the midline of the body.

  • Lateral: Away from the midline of the body.

  • Intermediate: Between a more medial and a more lateral structure.

  • Proximal: Closer to the origin of a body part or the point of attachment (used for limbs).

  • Distal: Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment (used for limbs).

  • Superficial (external): Toward or at the body surface.

  • Deep (internal): Away from the body surface; more internal.

Body Regions and Divisions

The body is divided into two major regions: axial and appendicular. Regional terms are used to designate specific areas within these divisions.

  • Axial region: Includes the head, neck, and trunk.

  • Appendicular region: Includes the limbs (arms and legs).

Examples of regional terms include: cephalic (head), cervical (neck), thoracic (chest), brachial (arm), femoral (thigh), and many others. These terms help specify locations for clinical and anatomical reference.

Body Planes and Sections

Body planes are imaginary lines used to divide the body into sections for anatomical study and medical imaging.

  • Sagittal plane: Divides the body into right and left parts. If exactly in the middle, it is called the midsagittal plane; if off-center, it is a parasagittal plane.

  • Frontal (coronal) plane: Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts.

  • Transverse (horizontal) plane: Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts; also called a cross-section.

  • Oblique plane: Divides the body at an angle (less commonly used).

Body Cavities and Membranes

The body contains internal cavities that protect organs and allow for organ movement and expansion. There are two main sets of body cavities: dorsal and ventral.

  • Dorsal body cavity: Protects the nervous system and has two subdivisions:

    • Cranial cavity: Encases the brain.

    • Vertebral cavity: Encases the spinal cord.

  • Ventral body cavity: Houses internal organs (viscera) and is divided by the diaphragm into:

    • Thoracic cavity: Contains the heart and lungs, further divided into pleural cavities (lungs), mediastinum (central compartment), and pericardial cavity (heart).

    • Abdominopelvic cavity: Contains the abdominal cavity (digestive organs, spleen, liver) and pelvic cavity (urinary bladder, reproductive organs, rectum).

Clinical Note: The abdominopelvic organs are more vulnerable to trauma because their walls are formed only by muscle, not reinforced by bone, unlike the pelvic organs which are protected by the pelvic girdle.

Abdominopelvic Quadrants and Regions

The abdominopelvic cavity is divided for clinical and anatomical reference:

  • Quadrants: Right upper (RUQ), left upper (LUQ), right lower (RLQ), left lower (LLQ).

  • Nine regions: Right hypochondriac, epigastric, left hypochondriac, right lumbar, umbilical, left lumbar, right iliac (inguinal), hypogastric (pubic), left iliac (inguinal).

These divisions help localize pain, injuries, or disease processes for diagnosis and treatment.

Other Body Cavities

In addition to the main body cavities, there are several smaller cavities:

  • Oral and digestive cavities (mouth and digestive tract)

  • Nasal cavity (within the nose)

  • Orbital cavities (eyes)

  • Middle ear cavities

  • Synovial cavities (joint cavities, not exposed to the environment)

Serous Membranes

Serous membranes line body cavities and cover organs. They are named according to their location:

  • Parietal serosa: Lines the cavity walls.

  • Visceral serosa: Covers the organs within the cavity.

  • The space between these layers is filled with serous fluid to reduce friction.

Examples:

  • Pleura: Lungs

  • Pericardium: Heart

  • Peritoneum: Abdominopelvic organs

The serous membrane arrangement is similar to pushing a fist into a balloon, creating a double layer with a fluid-filled space in between.

The knee is distal to the thigh.

Superficial (external)

Toward or at the body surface

The skin is superficial to the skeletal muscles.

Deep (internal)

Away from the body surface; more internal

The lungs are deep to the skin.
