The anatomical position is the reference posture used to describe the locations and relationships of body parts. In this position, the body stands upright, facing forward, with feet parallel and arms at the sides, palms facing forward. All directional terms are based on this position, regardless of the actual posture of the body.

Body Regions

The human body is divided into specific regions for clarity in description. These regions are grouped into major areas such as the head (cephalic), neck (cervical), trunk (thoracic, abdominal, pelvic), upper limb, and lower limb. Definition and Application

Directional terms are used to describe the locations of structures relative to other structures or locations in the body. These terms are essential for clear communication in anatomy and medicine.

  • Superior (cranial): Toward the head or upper part of a structure

  • Inferior (caudal): Away from the head or toward the lower part of a structure

  • Anterior (ventral): Toward the front of the body

  • Posterior (dorsal): Toward the back of the body

  • Medial: Toward the midline of the body

  • Lateral: Away from the midline of the body

  • Proximal: Closer to the point of attachment or origin

Body Planes and Sections

Major Body Planes

Body planes are imaginary lines used to divide the body into sections for anatomical study and medical imaging. The three primary planes are:

  • Median (midsagittal) plane: Divides the body into equal right and left halves

  • Frontal (coronal) plane: Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts

  • Transverse (horizontal) plane: Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts

Sections and Their Appearance

Sections are actual cuts or slices along a plane. The appearance of structures can vary greatly depending on the plane of section, which is important in interpreting medical images such as MRI or CT scans.

  • Transverse (cross) section: Horizontal cut, often used in imaging

  • Median section: Vertical cut along the midline

  • Frontal section: Vertical cut dividing anterior and posterior

Body Cavities and Membranes

Major Body Cavities

The body contains internal cavities that protect organs and allow for changes in organ shape and size. The two main cavities are:

  • Dorsal body cavity: Contains the cranial cavity (brain) and vertebral cavity (spinal cord)

  • Ventral body cavity: Contains the thoracic cavity (heart and lungs) and abdominopelvic cavity (digestive, urinary, and reproductive organs)

Serous Membranes

The abdominopelvic cavity is divided into four quadrants for clinical reference:
