Overview of Body Tissues

The human body is composed of four primary tissue types, each with distinct structures and functions. Understanding these tissues is fundamental to the study of anatomy and physiology.

  • Epithelial Tissue: Covers body surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands.

  • Connective Tissue: Supports, binds, and protects other tissues and organs.

  • Muscle Tissue: Responsible for movement through contraction.

  • Nervous Tissue: Initiates and transmits electrical impulses for communication.

Cellular Connections in Tissues

Cells within tissues are held together by specialized junctions that maintain tissue integrity and function.

  • Tight Junctions: Seal adjacent cells to prevent passage of substances between them.

  • Desmosomes: Anchor cells together, providing mechanical stability.

  • Gap Junctions: Allow direct communication between cells via small channels.

  • Hemidesmosomes: Attach cells to the basement membrane.

  • Adherens Junctions: Connect actin filaments between cells for structural support.

Epithelial Tissue

Characteristics of Epithelial Tissue

  • Cellularity: Composed almost entirely of tightly packed cells.

  • Polarity: Has an apical (free) surface and a basal (attached) surface.

  • Attachment: Supported by a basement membrane.

  • Avascularity: Lacks blood vessels; nutrients diffuse from underlying tissues.

  • Regeneration: High capacity for renewal through mitosis.

Naming Epithelial Tissue

Epithelial tissues are named using two terms:

  • First Name: Indicates the number of cell layers (simple = one layer; stratified = multiple layers).

  • Second Name: Describes the cell shape (Squamous = flat; Cuboidal = cube-shaped; Columnar = tall).

Rare; found in male urethra, some glandular ducts.

Glandular Epithelium

Glandular epithelium is classified based on where they secrete their products:

  • Endocrine Glands: Ductless; secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream.

  • Exocrine Glands: Secrete products into ducts that open onto surfaces (e.g., sweat, saliva).

Body Membranes

Types of Body Membranes

  • Epithelial Membranes:

    • Serous Membranes: Line closed ventral body cavities (e.g., peritoneum, pleura, pericardium); secrete serous fluid to reduce friction.

  • Synovial Membranes: Found in joint cavities; secrete synovial fluid for lubrication.

Tissue Repair

Tissue repair involves the restoration of tissue architecture and function after injury. It typically occurs in two major steps:

  • Regeneration: Replacement of destroyed tissue with the same kind of cells.

  • Fibrosis: Replacement with scar tissue (dense connective tissue).

The capacity for repair varies among tissue types; epithelial and connective tissues generally repair well, while muscle and nervous tissues have limited regenerative ability.
