Definitions and Relationship

Anatomy is the study of body structures, while physiology is the study of the function of those structures. The two disciplines are closely related, as the form of anatomical structures is directly tied to the functions they perform. For example, the shape of the lens in the eye allows it to properly bend (refract) light, enabling vision.

Major Subdivisions

  • Macroscopic (Gross) Anatomy: Study of structures visible to the naked eye.

  • Microscopic Anatomy: Study of structures only visible with a microscope.

Approaches to Macroscopic Anatomy

  • Systemic Anatomy: Study of structures that work together to accomplish a specific function (e.g., digestive system).

  • Regional Anatomy: Study of all structures in a particular area of the body (e.g., head and neck).

  • Surface Anatomy: Study of external landmarks that relate to deeper structures (e.g., palpating the radial pulse at the wrist).

Microscopic Anatomy

  • Cytology: Study of individual cells.

  • Histology: Study of tissues (groups of similar cells performing a function).

Other Divisions of Anatomy

  • Developmental Anatomy: Study of structural changes from conception to death. Embryology is a subfield focusing on development from conception to birth.

  • Pathological Anatomy: Study of structural changes caused by disease.

  • Radiographic Anatomy: Study of structures using imaging techniques (e.g., X-rays, MRI, ultrasound).

Levels of Organization in the Human Body

Introduction

The human body is a complex structure composed of many smaller parts working together. Understanding the body requires examining its organization at different hierarchical levels, from the simplest chemical components to the complete organism.

Chemical Level

The simplest level of organization is the chemical level, which includes atoms and molecules. Atoms are the basic units of matter, composed of subatomic particles (protons, neutrons, electrons). Atoms combine to form molecules, such as water (H2O).

Cellular Level

Molecules combine to form organelles, which are specialized structures within cells. Cells are the smallest living units in the body and represent the first level at which life is observed. The human body contains trillions of cells, each with specific functions.

Tissue Level

Cells with similar structure and function group together to form tissues. There are four major tissue types in the human body:

  • Epithelial Tissue (e.g., lining of intestines)

  • Connective Tissue (e.g., dense elastic tissue of the aorta)

  • Muscle Tissue (e.g., cardiac muscle of the heart)

  • Nervous Tissue (e.g., brain tissue)

Organ Level

Tissues combine to form organs, which are specialized structures that perform specific functions. Most organs contain all four tissue types. For example, the stomach contains epithelial, muscle, nervous, and connective tissues.

Organ System Level

Organs work together to form organ systems. Each organ system carries out major functions necessary for life. For example, the digestive system includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, and accessory organs.

Organism Level

All organ systems together form the organism—the living human body. This is the highest level of organization, encompassing all previous levels.
