Directional Terms and Planes of Section

Directional Terms

  • Superior: Above; at a higher level; toward the head.

  • Inferior: Below; at a lower level; toward the feet.

  • Proximal: Toward the point of attachment of a limb to the trunk (e.g., the shoulder is proximal to the wrist).

  • Distal: Away from the point of attachment of a limb to the trunk (e.g., the fingers are distal to the wrist).

  • Medial: Toward the midline of the body.

  • Lateral: Away from the midline of the body.

  • Cranial (Cephalic): Toward the head (e.g., cranial nerves are in the head).

  • Caudal: Toward the tail (coccyx in humans).

  • Example: Regulation of body temperature—if body temperature rises, mechanisms are activated to cool the body; if it falls, mechanisms are activated to warm the body.

  • Positive Feedback: Mechanisms that amplify or enhance the effects of a stimulus. Usually occurs in response to stressful processes to cause them to end and allow the body to return to normal.

  • Example: Childbirth—contractions increase in intensity and frequency until delivery occurs.
