Tissues of the Human Body

The human body is composed of four primary tissue types: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous tissues. Each type has specialized structures and functions, and is distributed in specific locations throughout the body. Understanding these tissues is fundamental to the study of histology and human anatomy.

Epithelial Tissue

Epithelial tissue covers body surfaces, lines internal cavities and passageways, and forms certain glands. It is classified based on the number of cell layers and the shape of the cells.

  • Simple squamous epithelium: Single layer of flat cells; found lining body cavities (as mesothelium or serous membranes such as peritoneum, pleura, and pericardium), endothelium of blood vessels, Bowman’s capsule and loop of Henle in kidney tubules, alveoli of lungs, and inner surface of the eardrum.

  • Simple cuboidal epithelium: Single layer of cube-shaped cells; present in many glands (liver, pancreas, salivary glands), pigmented epithelium of retina, kidney tubules, choroid plexus of brain, terminal bronchioles of lungs, and surface of ovaries.

  • Simple columnar epithelium: Single layer of tall, column-like cells; lines the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, gallbladder, bronchioles of lungs, auditory tubes, uterus, uterine tubes, stomach, bile ducts, and ventricles of the brain.

  • Stratified squamous epithelium: Multiple layers of flat cells; keratinized type forms the epidermis, while the moist type lines mucous membranes at body openings (mouth, nose, end of urethra, anus, vagina, esophagus, cornea, conjunctiva).

  • Stratified cuboidal epithelium: Two or more layers of cube-shaped cells; found in tubules of testes, follicles of ovaries, sweat gland ducts, and salivary gland ducts.

  • Stratified columnar epithelium: Multiple layers with columnar surface cells; found where simple columnar meets stratified squamous (pharynx, larynx), mammary gland duct, and portions of male urethra.

  • Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium: Appears layered but all cells touch the basement membrane; ciliated type lines air passageways down to alveoli and fallopian tubes.

  • Pseudostratified (nonciliated) columnar epithelium: Nonciliated type found in the male reproductive tract (epididymis and vas deferens, often with stereocilia).

  • Transitional epithelium: Specialized for stretching; lines the urinary bladder, ureter, and superior urethra.

Connective Tissue

Connective tissue supports, binds, and protects other tissues and organs. It is classified into loose, dense, cartilage, bone, and blood tissues.

Loose Connective Tissue

  • Areolar tissue: Supports epithelial basement membranes, fills spaces between organs, and surrounds glands, muscles, and nerves.

  • Adipose tissue: Stores fat; found subcutaneously, in breasts, yellow bone marrow, around organs (heart, kidneys), greater omentum, and attached to the colon.

  • Reticular tissue: Forms a supportive framework for capillaries, nerve endings, liver, lymphoid tissues, bone marrow, and within lymph nodes and spleen.

Dense Connective Tissue

  • Regular Dense C.T.: Collagen fibers aligned in parallel; forms tendons, ligaments, and ligaments between vertebrae, dorsal neck, and vocal cords.

  • Irregular Dense C.T.: Collagen fibers in various directions; found in sheaths and septa of muscles and nerves (epimysium, perimysium, epineurium, perineurium), perichondrium, periosteum, most of the dermis, and organ capsules.

  • Elastic C.T.: Contains elastic fibers; found in elastic arteries.

Cartilage

  • Hyaline cartilage: Most common type; found in fetal skeleton, costal cartilages, tip of nose, epiphyseal growth plates, ends of long bones, large laryngeal cartilages (thyroid, cricoid), and articular surfaces.

  • Elastic cartilage: Contains more elastic fibers; found in epiglottis, auditory tube, and auricles of the external ear.

  • Fibrocartilage: Contains abundant collagen fibers; found in intervertebral disks, pubic symphysis, and articular disks (e.g., temporomandibular joint).

Bone

  • Cancellous (spongy) bone: Porous, found in the interior of skull bones, vertebrae, sternum, pelvis, and epiphyses of long bones.

  • Compact bone: Dense, forms the outer portions of all bones and the shaft (diaphysis) of long bones.

Blood

  • Blood: Fluid connective tissue; circulates in blood vessels and the heart, transporting nutrients, gases, wastes, and cells of the immune system.

Muscular Tissue

Muscular tissue is specialized for contraction and movement. There are three types:

  • Skeletal muscle: Voluntary, striated muscle attached to bones; also found in the tongue, pharynx, larynx, and extrinsic eye muscles.

  • Smooth muscle: Involuntary, non-striated muscle in the walls of hollow organs (esophagus, stomach, intestines, blood vessels, ureters, urinary bladder, uterine tube, vas deferens).

  • Cardiac muscle: Involuntary, striated muscle found only in the heart; responsible for pumping blood.

Nervous Tissue

Nervous tissue is specialized for communication via electrical and chemical signals. It forms the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.

  • Nervous tissue proper: Composed of neurons and supporting glial cells; found in the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.
