    • Synthesizes vitamin D.

  • Example: The skin acts as a barrier to pathogens and helps prevent dehydration.

2. Skeletal System

  • Main Components: Bones, cartilages, ligaments, bone marrow.

  • Functions:

    • Provides protection and support for body organs.

    • Framework for muscle attachment, enabling movement.

    • Stores minerals (e.g., calcium, phosphorus).

    • Site of blood cell formation (hematopoiesis) in bone marrow.

  • Example: The rib cage protects the heart and lungs.

3. Muscular System

  • Main Components: Skeletal muscles, tendons.

  • Functions:

    • Produces movement of the body and its parts.

    • Maintains posture and body position.

    • Generates heat during muscle activity.

  • Example: Biceps brachii muscle flexes the forearm at the elbow.

4. Nervous System

  • Main Components: Brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, sensory organs.

  • Functions:

    • Acts as the control center of the body.

    • Directs immediate responses to stimuli.

    • Coordinates activities of other organ systems.

5. Endocrine System

6. Cardiovascular System

  • Example: The heart pumps oxygenated blood to tissues via arteries.

7. Lymphoid (Lymphatic and Immune) System

  • Main Components: Lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, thymus, spleen, lymphocytes, lymphoid tissue.

  • Functions:

    • Returns leaked fluid from tissues to the blood.

    • Provides defense against pathogens and disease.

    • Houses white blood cells (lymphocytes) involved in immunity.

  • Example: Lymph nodes filter lymph and trap foreign particles.

8. Respiratory System

  • Main Components: Nasal cavities, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, alveoli.

  • Functions:

    • Supplies blood with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide.

    • Gas exchange occurs at the alveoli in the lungs.

  • Example: Inhalation brings oxygen into the lungs for diffusion into the bloodstream.

9. Digestive System

  • Main Components: Gastrointestinal tract (mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines), accessory organs (liver, pancreas, gallbladder).

  • Functions:

    • Breaks down food into absorbable units.

    • Absorbs nutrients into the blood.

    • Eliminates indigestible wastes.

  • Example: The small intestine absorbs nutrients from digested food.

10. Urinary System

  • Main Components: Kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra.

  • Functions:

    • Eliminates excess water, salts, and nitrogenous wastes from the body.

    • Regulates water, electrolyte, and acid-base balance of the blood.

  • Example: The kidneys filter blood to form urine, which is excreted from the body.

11. Reproductive System

  • Main Components: Gonads (testes in males, ovaries in females), accessory organs, external genitalia.

  • Functions:

    • Produces sex cells (sperm and ova) and sex hormones.

    • Facilitates fertilization and development of offspring.

    • Female system supports embryonic and fetal development.

  • Example: Ovaries produce eggs and hormones such as estrogen and progesterone.
