Introduction

Tissues are groups of similar cells that perform specific functions in the body. The four primary tissue types are epithelial, connective, muscular, and neural tissues. Each type has unique structures, cell types, locations, and functions essential for maintaining homeostasis and supporting organ systems.

Epithelial Tissue

Overview

Epithelial tissue covers body surfaces, lines internal cavities, and forms glands. It is classified by cell shape and the number of cell layers.

  • Functions: Protection, secretion, absorption, filtration, and sensation.

  • Cell shapes: Squamous (flat), cuboidal (cube-shaped), columnar (tall and column-like).

  • Layers: Simple (one layer), stratified (multiple layers), pseudostratified (appears layered but is not), transitional (changes shape).
