The Integumentary System

Overview

The integumentary system is the body's largest organ system, primarily responsible for protection, sensation, and regulation. It consists of the skin and its associated structures, including hair, glands, and sensory receptors. The skin itself is composed of three main layers: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis.

Skin Structure

Epidermis

The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin, providing a barrier against environmental damage and pathogens. It is composed of several distinct strata (layers):

  • Stratum basale: The deepest layer, consisting of a single row of stem cells that continuously divide to produce new keratinocytes. This layer also contains melanocytes, which produce the pigment melanin.

  • Stratum spinosum: Several layers of keratinocytes connected by desmosomes. Cells in this layer begin to produce keratin and are involved in immune responses.

  • Stratum granulosum: Cells in this layer accumulate granules containing keratin and glycolipids, which help waterproof the skin.

  • Stratum lucidum: A thin, clear layer found only in thick skin (such as the palms and soles). It provides an extra barrier.

  • Stratum corneum: The outermost layer, composed of dead, flattened keratinocytes. This layer provides protection and is continuously shed and replaced.

Dermis

The dermis lies beneath the epidermis and provides structural support, nourishment, and elasticity to the skin. It is divided into two layers:

  • Papillary layer: The superficial layer, composed of loose connective tissue. It contains capillaries, nerve endings, and forms dermal papillae that interlock with the epidermis, increasing surface area for exchange.

  • Reticular layer: The deeper layer, made of dense irregular connective tissue. It contains collagen and elastin fibers, providing strength and flexibility. This layer houses many skin appendages and blood vessels.

Hypodermis

The hypodermis (also called the subcutaneous layer) is located beneath the dermis. It consists mainly of adipose tissue and loose connective tissue, serving as insulation, energy storage, and cushioning for underlying structures.

Appendages of the Skin

Hair

  • Hair shaft: The visible part of the hair above the skin surface, composed of dead, keratinized cells.

  • Hair bulb: The expanded base of the hair follicle, where hair growth occurs. Contains the hair matrix (actively dividing cells).

  • Hair follicle: The tubular structure that surrounds the hair root and extends into the dermis.

  • Hair papilla: A small, capillary-rich projection at the base of the hair bulb, providing nutrients for hair growth.

  • Hair root: The portion of the hair embedded within the follicle, below the skin surface.

  • Arrector pili muscle: A small band of smooth muscle attached to the hair follicle. Contraction causes "goosebumps" by raising the hair.

Glands

  • Sudoriferous gland: Also known as sweat glands, these are responsible for producing sweat, which helps regulate body temperature and excrete waste products. There are two types: eccrine (found all over the body) and apocrine (found in specific areas like the armpits).

  • Sebaceous gland: These glands secrete sebum, an oily substance that lubricates and waterproofs the skin and hair. They are typically associated with hair follicles.

Sensory Receptors

  • Pacinian corpuscle: Deep pressure and vibration receptor located in the dermis and hypodermis.

  • Meissner’s corpuscle: Touch receptor found in the papillary layer of the dermis, sensitive to light touch.
