Structure and Function of the Eye
The eye is a complex organ responsible for vision, consisting of multiple segments, fluids, and specialized structures. Understanding its anatomy and physiology is essential for comprehending how vision occurs and how various conditions affect sight.
Lens
Cataracts: Occur when the lens becomes hard and opaque with age, leading to vision that is hazy and distorted. Eventually, cataracts can cause blindness in the affected eye.

Two Segments, or Chambers, of the Eye

Anterior (aqueous) segment: Located anterior to the lens and contains aqueous humor.
Posterior (vitreous) segment: Located posterior to the lens and contains vitreous humor.
Anterior Segment
The anterior segment is filled with aqueous humor, a watery fluid similar to blood plasma.

Helps maintain intraocular pressure
Provides nutrients for the lens and cornea
Reabsorbed into venous blood through the scleral venous sinus (canal of Schlemm)
Example: Disruption in aqueous humor drainage can lead to increased intraocular pressure, resulting in glaucoma.
Posterior Segment
The posterior segment contains vitreous humor, a gel-like substance that fills the space behind the lens.
Helps maintain intraocular pressure
Prevents the eye from collapsing
Example: Loss of vitreous humor integrity can cause retinal detachment.
Ophthalmoscope
An ophthalmoscope is an instrument used to illuminate and examine the interior of the eyeball, including the fundus (posterior wall), optic nerve, and retina.
Can detect conditions such as diabetes, arteriosclerosis, and degeneration of the optic nerve and retina
Example: Routine eye exams with an ophthalmoscope can reveal early signs of diabetic retinopathy.
Pathway of Light Through the Eye
For optimal vision, light must be focused precisely on the retina. The eye's structures bend (refract) light to achieve this focus.
Light is bent by the cornea, aqueous humor, lens, and vitreous humor
The eye is set for distance vision (over 20 feet away)
Example: Refractive errors such as myopia and hyperopia occur when light is not properly focused on the retina.
