Anatomical Position and Body Positions

Anatomical Position

The anatomical position is the standard reference position for the body, used to describe the location of structures. All anatomical descriptions are expressed in relation to this position.

  • Body erect (standing upright)

  • Head, eyes, and feet facing forward and parallel

  • Feet slightly apart or together

  • Arms at the sides

  • Palms facing forward

  • Thumbs pointing outward/away from the body

Directional Terms

Basic Directional Terms

Directional terms are used to describe the locations of structures relative to other structures or locations in the body.

  • Superior (Cranial): Toward the head or upper part of a structure

  • Inferior (Caudal): Away from the head or toward the lower part of a structure

  • Anterior (Ventral): Toward the front of the body

  • Posterior (Dorsal): Toward the back of the body

Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk

The knee is distal to the thigh.

Superficial (external)

Toward or at the body surface

The skin is superficial to the skeletal muscles.

Deep (internal)

Away from the body surface; more internal

The lungs are deep to the skin.

Laterality Terms

  • Unilateral: Structure occurs on only one side of the body

  • Bilateral: Same structure occurs on both sides of the body

  • Ipsilateral: Two different structures on the same side of the body

  • Contralateral: Two different structures on opposite sides of the body

Anatomical Body Planes

Major Body Planes

Body planes are imaginary lines used to divide the body for anatomical study and imaging.

  • Sagittal Plane: Divides the body into right and left parts

    • Midsagittal (Median) Plane: Divides the body into equal right and left halves

    • Parasagittal Plane: Divides the body into unequal right and left parts

  • Frontal (Coronal) Plane: Divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) parts

  • Transverse (Horizontal/Axial) Plane: Divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) parts; also called a cross-section

  • Oblique Plane: Cuts made diagonally between horizontal and vertical planes

Main Body Cavities

  • Ventral Body Cavity: Houses internal organs; subdivided into:

    • Thoracic Cavity: Contains heart and lungs

    • Abdominopelvic Cavity: Contains digestive, urinary, and reproductive organs

  • Dorsal Body Cavity: Protects nervous system organs; subdivided into:

    • Cranial Cavity: Encases the brain

    • Vertebral (Spinal) Cavity: Encases the spinal cord

Subdivisions of the Thoracic and Abdominopelvic Cavities

  • Pleural Cavities: Encase the lungs (right and left)

  • Mediastinum: Area between the lungs; contains the pericardial cavity

  • Pericardial Cavity: Encloses the heart

Serous Membranes

Types and Functions

Serous membranes are thin, double-layered membranes that cover the walls of the ventral body cavity and the outer surfaces of organs. They secrete serous fluid for lubrication and protection.

  • Visceral Serous Membrane: Covers the surface of internal organs

  • Parietal Serous Membrane: Lines the internal body cavity wall

Specific named serous membranes include:

  • Pleura: Covers the lungs

  • Pericardium: Covers the heart

  • Peritoneum: Covers abdominopelvic structures
