Special Senses

The human body detects and interprets environmental stimuli through specialized sensory organs. The special senses include smell, taste, sight, hearing, and equilibrium. Each sense is associated with a specific organ and unique sensory receptors that allow for the perception of complex stimuli.

  • Smell (Olfaction): Detected by olfactory receptors in the nasal cavity.

  • Taste (Gustation): Detected by taste buds primarily on the tongue.

  • Sight (Vision): Detected by photoreceptors in the eyes.

  • Hearing (Audition): Detected by mechanoreceptors in the ear.

  • Equilibrium (Balance): Detected by structures in the inner ear.

The Eye and Vision

Overview of Vision

The sense of vision is one of the most complex and highly developed senses in humans. Approximately 70% of all sensory receptors in the body are located in the eyes, and each eye contains over 1 million nerve fibers that transmit visual information to the brain.

  • Protection of the Eye:

    • The eye is enclosed in a bony orbit (eye socket) for protection.

    • A cushion of fat surrounds most of the eye, providing additional protection and support.

Accessory Structures of the Eye

Introduction to Accessory Structures

The eye is supported and protected by several accessory structures that help maintain its function and health. These include the eyelids and eyelashes, conjunctiva, lacrimal apparatus, and extrinsic eye muscles.

  • Eyelids and Eyelashes: Protect the eye from foreign objects and help spread moisture across the surface of the eye.

  • Conjunctiva: A mucous membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the anterior surface of the eyeball, except the cornea.

  • Lacrimal Apparatus: Produces and drains tears to keep the eye moist and free of debris.

  • Extrinsic Eye Muscles: Control the movement of the eyeball within the orbit.

Eyelids and Eyelashes

The eyelids meet at the medial and lateral commissures (also called canthi). The eyelashes are equipped with glands that produce secretions to lubricate the eye:

  • Tarsal glands: Produce an oily secretion that prevents the eyelids from sticking together and lubricates the surface of the eye.

  • Ciliary glands: Located between the eyelashes, these glands also contribute to eye lubrication.

Conjunctiva

The conjunctiva is a thin, transparent membrane that:

  • Lines the inside of the eyelids.

  • Connects to the outer surface of the eye (except the cornea).

  • Secretes mucus to lubricate the eye and keep it moist, reducing friction and preventing infection.

Lacrimal Apparatus

The lacrimal apparatus consists of the lacrimal gland and a series of ducts that produce and drain tears (lacrimal fluid). Its main components and functions are:

  • Lacrimal gland: Produces lacrimal fluid (tears); located on the lateral aspect of each eye.

  • Lacrimal canaliculi: Drain lacrimal fluid from the eyes medially toward the nose.

  • Lacrimal sac: Provides a passageway for lacrimal fluid toward the nasal cavity.

  • Nasolacrimal duct: Empties lacrimal fluid into the nasal cavity, which explains why your nose runs when you cry.
