A Tour of the Cell

Introduction to Cell Biology

Advancements in microscopy have greatly expanded our understanding of the cellular basis of life. Early microscopes were initially considered novelties, but their development led to foundational discoveries in biology.

  • Robert Hooke used a crude microscope to examine cork and coined the term "cell" after observing small compartments he called "cellulae" (Latin for "little rooms").

  • Antonie van Leeuwenhoek later improved microscope design and observed living cells in blood, sperm, and pond water, furthering the study of cell biology.

This chapter explores the structure and function of cells, the fundamental units of life.
