Relationship Between Structure and Function

The form (structure) of an organism is closely related to its function (what it does). Evolution shapes anatomical structures to suit the environment and lifestyle of each species.

  • Key Point: Structures are adapted for specific functions. For example, bird wings are adapted for flight, and shark fins are adapted for swimming.

  • Example: The streamlined body of a fish reduces water resistance, aiding in swimming efficiency.

Tissues in Animals

Definition and Types of Tissues

Tissues are groups of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function. In animals, there are four main types of tissues:

  • 1. Epithelial Tissue: Covers body surfaces, lines internal cavities, and forms glands. Examples: Skin, lining of the intestine.

  • 2. Connective Tissue: Connects, supports, and protects other tissues and organs. Examples: Bone, blood, cartilage, fat (adipose tissue).

  • 3. Muscle Tissue: Responsible for contraction and movement. Examples: Skeletal muscles, cardiac muscle (heart), smooth muscle (digestive tract).
