Key Vocabulary and Concepts

This section introduces foundational terms and concepts essential for understanding the study of biology. Mastery of these terms will provide a strong basis for exploring more advanced topics in the biological sciences.

  • Artificial Selection: The process by which humans breed plants and animals for particular traits. Example: Breeding dogs for specific sizes or temperaments.

  • Biology: The scientific study of life and living organisms, encompassing their structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy.

  • Biosphere: The global sum of all ecosystems; the regions of the surface, atmosphere, and hydrosphere of the Earth occupied by living organisms.

  • Cell: The basic structural, functional, and biological unit of all living organisms. Cells can be prokaryotic or eukaryotic.

  • Community: An assemblage of different populations that live together in a defined area and interact with each other.

  • Controlled Experiment: An experiment in which only one variable is changed at a time, allowing scientists to isolate the effects of that variable.

  • Data: Recorded observations or measurements collected during scientific investigation.

  • Dependent Variable: The variable being tested and measured in an experiment; it is affected by changes in the independent variable.

  • Domain: The highest taxonomic rank in the classification of organisms, above kingdom. The three domains are Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya.

  • Ecosystem: A community of living organisms in conjunction with the nonliving components of their environment, interacting as a system.

  • Emergent Properties: New properties that arise with each step upward in the hierarchy of life, due to the arrangement and interactions of parts as complexity increases. Example: The heart's ability to pump blood is an emergent property of cardiac tissue.

  • Evolution: The process by which different kinds of living organisms develop and diversify from earlier forms during the history of the earth.

  • Experiment: A scientific procedure undertaken to test a hypothesis by collecting data under controlled conditions.

  • Gene: A unit of heredity that is transferred from a parent to offspring and determines some characteristic of the offspring.

  • Gene Expression: The process by which information from a gene is used to synthesize a functional gene product, often a protein.

  • Hypothesis: A testable explanation for a set of observations or a scientific question.

  • Independent Variable: The variable that is changed or controlled in a scientific experiment to test its effects on the dependent variable.

  • Molecule: Two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds; the smallest unit of a chemical compound that retains its chemical properties.

  • Natural Selection: The process by which organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring. This is a key mechanism of evolution.

  • Organ: A group of tissues that work together to perform a specific function or group of functions.

  • Organ System: A group of organs that work together to perform one or more functions. Example: The digestive system.

  • Organelle: Specialized structures within a cell that perform distinct processes. Example: Mitochondria, nucleus.

  • Organism: An individual living thing, such as a bacterium, fungus, plant, or animal.

  • Population: A group of individuals of the same species that live in the same area and interbreed.

  • Science: The systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.

  • Systems Biology: An approach in biology focusing on the study of complex interactions within biological systems, using a holistic perspective.

  • Technology: The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry.

  • Theory: A well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment.

  • Tissue: A group of similar cells that perform a specific function. Example: Muscle tissue, nervous tissue.
