Components of the Digestive System

The digestive system is responsible for the breakdown and absorption of nutrients. It consists of several organs and accessory structures that work together to process food.

  • Salivary glands: Produce saliva to initiate digestion and lubricate food.

  • Esophagus: Muscular tube that transports food from the mouth to the stomach.

Tooth Anatomy

Teeth are essential for mechanical digestion. Each tooth has distinct parts:

  • Enamel: Hard, outermost layer protecting the tooth.

Gallbladder and Bile Ducts

The gallbladder stores bile produced by the liver. Bile ducts transport bile to the duodenum.

  • Common bile duct: Main duct to duodenum.

  • Cystic duct: Connects gallbladder to common bile duct.

  • Common hepatic duct: Formed from right and left hepatic ducts.

Pancreas Anatomy

The pancreas produces digestive enzymes and hormones.

  • Pancreatic duct: Delivers enzymes to duodenum.

Cardiovascular System

Blood and Blood Cell Identification

Blood is a connective tissue composed of cells suspended in plasma. Blood cell types include:

  • Eosinophils: Combat parasites and allergies.

  • Right/left coronary artery: Supply oxygenated blood.

  • Great cardiac vein: Drains deoxygenated blood.

Cardiac Conduction System

The heart's electrical system coordinates contraction.

  • Sinoatrial (SA) node: Pacemaker, initiates heartbeat.

  • Atrioventricular (AV) node: Delays impulse.

  • Atrioventricular bundle (Bundle of His): Conducts impulse to ventricles.

  • Right and left bundle branches: Carry impulse through septum.

  • Purkinje fibers: Distribute impulse to ventricular muscle.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

Blood pressure is the force of blood against vessel walls. It is measured as:
