Biology: The Scientific Study of Life

Biology is the branch of science concerned with the study of living organisms and life processes. It encompasses various levels of organization, from atoms to ecosystems.

Characteristics of Living Organisms

  3. Respond to Environmental Stimuli: Organisms detect and respond to changes in their environment.

Levels of Biological Organization

Life consists of multiple parts organized into a hierarchical pattern, from the smallest chemical units to the largest ecological systems.

  • Organelle: Specialized structures within cells that perform specific functions.

  • Cell: The smallest unit of life.

Emergent Properties

Emergent properties are characteristics that arise when combining smaller parts into a larger, more complex system. For example, life emerges from the interaction of molecules and cells.

Scientific Method

The scientific method is a systematic procedure used to answer questions, test ideas, and gain scientific knowledge.

  • Step 1: Make an observation and ask a question.

  • Step 2: Form a hypothesis (a testable explanation or prediction based on the observation).

  • Step 3: Make a prediction based on the hypothesis.

  • Step 4: Conduct an experiment to test the prediction.

  • Step 5: Analyze the results and draw conclusions.

Hypothesis: A proposed and testable explanation for an observation.

Experiment: A scientific investigation designed to test the validity of a hypothesis.
