Overview

Biology is the scientific study of life and living organisms. It encompasses a wide range of topics, from the molecular mechanisms within cells to the interactions of organisms within ecosystems. Understanding the fundamental characteristics and organization of life is essential for further study in biology.

1.1 Characteristics of Life

Defining Life

All living things share a set of fundamental characteristics that distinguish them from nonliving matter. These characteristics are used by biologists to determine whether something is alive.

  • Order: Living organisms exhibit complex but organized structures. Example: The arrangement of flower petals or the structure of insect eyes.

  • Regulation (Homeostasis): Organisms can regulate their internal environment, maintaining stable conditions despite changes in the external environment. Example: A lizard basking in the sun to raise its body temperature.

  • Growth and Development: Information carried in the genetic material (DNA) directs the growth and development of organisms. Example: Baby birds grow larger and develop feathers as they age.

  • Energy Processing: Living things obtain and use energy from their environment to power their activities and release energy as heat. Example: Bees consume nectar as an energy source.

  • Response to Environment: Organisms respond to stimuli in their environment. Example: A Venus Flytrap closes its leaves rapidly when triggered by an insect.

  • Reproduction: Living things can produce more of their own kind. Example: Giraffes give birth to giraffes, not to zebras or sharks.

  • Evolutionary Adaptation: Populations of living things change (evolve) over time, with certain traits being passed on more frequently. Example: Katydids have evolved coloration patterns that provide camouflage in their environment.

Discussion Point: To be considered alive, an entity should exhibit all of these characteristics. Some exceptions exist (e.g., viruses), but these criteria are the standard for biological life.

Application: Is It Alive?

When determining if something is alive, biologists look for evidence of these characteristics. For example, if you find a pile of furry balls next to a deer, you would check for movement, response to stimuli, growth, and other signs of life.

  • Experiment Example: To test for response to environment, you could gently touch the object and observe if it reacts.

1.2 Levels of Life

Biological Organization

Life is organized into a hierarchy of levels, from the largest scale (biosphere) to the smallest (molecules). Understanding these levels helps biologists study life at different scales.

  • Biosphere: All life on Earth and the places where life exists.

  • Ecosystem: All living organisms in a particular area, plus the nonliving components (soil, water, light) they interact with.

  • Community: All organisms found in a specific local area, such as a tide pool.

  • Population: A group of interacting individuals from a single species.

  • Organism: An individual living being.

  • Organ System: Connected organs that make up an organism’s body.

  • Tissue: A group of similar cells performing a specific function; tissues make up organs.

  • Cell: The smallest unit that can display all the characteristics of life.

  • Organelle: Functional components of cells, such as the nucleus that houses DNA.

  • Molecule: A cluster of atoms; cells contain many different molecules essential for life.

Classification of Living Organisms

Taxonomy is the branch of biology that deals with naming and classifying organisms. It organizes living things into related groups based on shared characteristics.

  • Classificication: Organization of organisms into related groups.

  • Hierarchical Classification: The system consists of eight major levels, from broadest to most specific:

Domains of Life

  • Bacteria: Unicellular prokaryotic organisms that live in a wide range of environments and have various shapes.

  • Archaea: Unicellular organisms that generally live in extreme environments (e.g., very salty or hot places).

  • Eukarya: Organisms with eukaryotic cells (cells with a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles). 3 kingdom which includes plants, fungi, and animals.

  • prokaryotic - no nucleus
