General Concepts

Photoautotrophs and Heterotrophs
Organisms are classified based on how they obtain energy and organic molecules:
Photoautotrophs (Producers):
Include plants, algae, and some prokaryotes (such as cyanobacteria).
Produce organic compounds from inorganic CO2 using light energy.
Serve as the main source of organic material and energy for heterotrophs.
Heterotrophs (Consumers):
Obtain organic material by consuming other organisms.
Depend on photoautotrophs for both food and oxygen produced during photosynthesis.

Photoautotroph: An organism that uses light energy to synthesize organic compounds from carbon dioxide.
Heterotroph: An organism that obtains organic food molecules by eating other organisms or their by-products.
Example: The Role of Plants in Ecosystems
Plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and, using sunlight, convert it into glucose, which can be used for energy or as a building block for other organic molecules.
Oxygen produced as a byproduct is released into the atmosphere, supporting aerobic respiration in animals and other non-photosynthetic organisms.
