Overview of Prokaryotic Cells
Prokaryotic cells, such as bacteria and archaea, are characterized by their simple structure and lack of membrane-bound organelles. Each part of the cell has a specific chemical composition and function essential for the cell's survival and activity.
Main Parts of a Prokaryotic Cell
Cell Wall Composition: Primarily peptidoglycan (in bacteria); in archaea, may be pseudopeptidoglycan or other polymers. Function: Protects the cell, maintains shape, and prevents osmotic lysis. Example: The thick peptidoglycan layer in Gram-positive bacteria.
Cell Membrane (Plasma Membrane) Composition: Phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins. Function: Controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell; site of metabolic activities. Example: Selective transport of nutrients and waste products.

Ribosome Composition: RNA and proteins. Function: Synthesizes proteins by translating messenger RNA. Example: Formation of enzymes and structural proteins.
DNA (Nucleoid Region) Composition: Double-stranded DNA. Function: Contains all of the genetic information (genome) of the cell. Example: Genes for metabolism, growth, and reproduction.
Capsule (if present) Composition: Polysaccharides or proteins. Function: Protects the cell from desiccation and phagocytosis. Example: Streptococcus pneumoniae capsule helps evade immune response. Additional info: Not all prokaryotes have a capsule; it is an extra layer outside the cell wall.
Flagellum (if present) Composition: Protein (flagellin). Function: Enables motility. Example: E. coli uses flagella to swim toward nutrients. Additional info: Not all prokaryotes have flagella; some use other structures for movement.

Are All Bacteria Pathogenic?
Not all bacteria are pathogenic. Many bacteria are harmless or beneficial, playing essential roles in nutrient cycling, digestion, and biotechnology. Pathogenic bacteria are those that cause disease in hosts.
Non-pathogenic bacteria: Lactobacillus in yogurt production.
Pathogenic bacteria: Streptococcus pyogenes causes strep throat.
Unique Features of Archaea Compared to Other Prokaryotes
Archaea are a distinct group of prokaryotes with unique biochemical and genetic features that set them apart from bacteria.
Cell Wall Composition: Archaea lack peptidoglycan; instead, they may have pseudopeptidoglycan or other polymers.
Membrane Lipids: Archaea have ether-linked lipids, while bacteria have ester-linked lipids.
Genetic Machinery: Archaeal transcription and translation mechanisms are more similar to eukaryotes than to bacteria.
Habitat: Many archaea are extremophiles, living in environments with high temperature, salinity, or acidity.
Example: Halobacterium thrives in high-salt environments.
