Scatterplot
A graph displaying paired numerical data as points on an x-y coordinate system to reveal relationships between two variables.
Paired Data
A set of numerical values where each entry in one variable corresponds directly to an entry in another variable.
Independent Variable
A quantity plotted on the x-axis, often manipulated or chosen first, influencing the dependent variable.
Dependent Variable
A quantity plotted on the y-axis, whose values are determined by or respond to the independent variable.
Correlation
A statistical relationship or trend between two variables, visible as a pattern or direction in a scatterplot.
Positive Correlation
A trend where increases in one variable are associated with increases in the other, forming an upward pattern.
Negative Correlation
A trend where increases in one variable are associated with decreases in the other, forming a downward pattern.
Linear Correlation
A relationship where data points align closely to a straight line, indicating a constant rate of change.
Nonlinear Relationship
A pattern where data points form a curve or shape other than a straight line, such as a parabola.
No Correlation
A situation where data points show no discernible pattern or relationship between the variables.
Causation
A direct cause-and-effect link between variables, which cannot be assumed solely from correlation.
Graphing Calculator
A technological tool used to input data, adjust settings, and visualize scatterplots efficiently.
X-Axis
The horizontal axis on a graph, typically representing the independent variable in a scatterplot.
Y-Axis
The vertical axis on a graph, typically representing the dependent variable in a scatterplot.
Window Settings
Adjustable parameters on a graphing calculator that define the visible range for axes to display data accurately.
