Lipids

Lipids are a diverse group of biological molecules that play crucial roles in cell structure and function. Among them, phospholipids are especially important for forming cell membranes and facilitating biological processes.

Example: The plasma membrane of all cells is a phospholipid bilayer, which acts as a selective barrier and supports cellular integrity.

Carbohydrates

  • Chitin: A modified carbohydrate containing nitrogen, forming the exoskeleton of arthropods (e.g., insects, spiders, crabs). Chitin is linear and non-branched.

  • Structural Carbohydrates: Chitin and cellulose provide structural support and protection. Cellulose is found in plant cell walls, while chitin is found in fungi and arthropods.

  • Energy Storage Carbohydrates: Starch (in plants) and glycogen (in animals) are branched carbohydrates used for energy storage.

  • Functional Diversity: Differences in molecular structure (branching, monomer composition) allow carbohydrates to serve various functions.

Example: Chitin forms the hard exoskeleton of crabs, while glycogen is stored in the liver and muscles of animals for energy.
