Body Structure

Introduction to Body Cavities

Body cavities are hollow spaces within the body that house internal organs. Understanding their classification and terminology is essential for medical professionals to describe locations and relationships of organs.

  • Body cavities are divided into two main groups: dorsal (posterior) and ventral (anterior) cavities.

  • Dorsal cavities protect the nervous system organs.

  • Ventral cavities house organs involved in circulation, digestion, and reproduction.

Ventral Body Cavities

The ventral body cavities are located at the front of the body and are subdivided into several regions, each containing specific organs.

  • Thoracic Cavity: Contains the lungs (in the pleural cavity) and the heart (in the pericardial cavity).

  • Diaphragm: A muscular partition that separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity.

  • Abdominal Cavity: Houses the stomach, intestines, liver, and other digestive organs.

  • Pelvic Cavity: Contains the urinary bladder and reproductive organs.

Example: The heart is located in the pericardial cavity within the thoracic cavity.

Dorsal Body Cavities

Dorsal body cavities are located at the back of the body and protect the central nervous system.

  • Cranial Cavity: Space inside the skull that contains the brain.

  • Spinal Cavity: Contains the spinal cord and spinal fluid.

Example: The spinal cord is protected within the spinal cavity.

Key Terms and Definitions

  • Pleural cavity: The space surrounding each lung.

  • Pericardial cavity: The space surrounding the heart.

  • Diaphragm: The muscle that separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities.

  • Cranium: The skull, which houses the brain.

Practice Questions (from the file)

  • Which organs are housed in the thoracic, abdominal, or pelvic cavities?

  • Which cavities are grouped under dorsal cavities?

  • Which statement is incorrect about body cavities?

Additional info: The notes provide foundational terminology and classification for body cavities, which is essential for understanding anatomical relationships and medical descriptions.
