Full-Tuition Scholarships for STEM Students

For over 20 years, the Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program has provided a pathway to education and a fulfilling career for students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Students who are awarded the SMART Scholarship become SMART scholars, joining a dynamic community of driven individuals dedicated to advancing research and innovation in SMART STEM disciplines. They receive comprehensive benefits including full tuition to any regionally accredited U.S. college or university, annual stipends, summer internships, and civilian employment with the Department of War (DoW) after graduation, forging a lasting professional network while gaining valuable academic support and hands-on experience.

More Than a Scholarship

The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program is a unique opportunity for STEM students to advance their education and jumpstart their careers.

In addition to comprehensive financial benefits and a guaranteed career after graduation, SMART scholars complete summer internships at world-class DoW facilities, where they contribute to cutting-edge research critical to national defense. These STEM internships provide mentorship from leading scientists and engineers, opportunities to refine technical skills, and strong foundations for future careers. After earning their degrees, scholars begin their one-for-one service commitment by beginning civilian roles with the DoW, applying their expertise to address real-world challenges.

Timeline / Availability: Application opens annually on August 1 and closes the first Friday in December. Funding begins the following August.
