Global Scale of English
Take the guesswork out of language progress
The Global Scale of English is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) and EIKEN's Common Scale of English, so that you can move seamlessly between courses and exams at any level, visualizing your students’ language progress with built-in monitoring tools.

How are you tracking your students' language progress?
Fostering independant and interactive deep learning by means of establishing curriculum management (PCDA establishment) on a per school level as laid out in the new curriculum guideline, is getting alot of attention. To implement those goals in English classes, each school needs to set learning objectives and assessments that measure progress based on what students can do.
At the same time, each school has a similar requirements such as:

Focus on contact hours

Easily demonstrate progress

According to our research, 90% of English teachers want to know better ways of capturing where their students' English levels are now and what they need to do next.

The Pearson English Learning Journey
We develop our English language courseware and assessment on a single scale - the Global Scale of English (GSE). The GSE is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) as well as the Common Scale of English (EIKEN), so that you can move seamlessly between courses and exams at any level, visualizing your students' language progress with built-in monitoring tools.

Pearson's courseware and assessment are associated with the GSE Learning Objectives that were based on research involving over 6,000 teachers from 50+ countries. It extends the Common European Framework and Reference (CEFR) by pinpointing on a scale from 10 to 90 what learners CAN DO in four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing within a CEFR level, using a more granular approach.
Four sets of Learning Objectives are being developed, each tailored to meet the specific audiences - Learners of Professional English, Academic English, Young Learners and General Adult Learners.

Pearson's assessment (CTB)
We have developed artificial intelligence systems that automate English language assessment. We combine advanced speech recognition and exam grading technology with the insight of English experts around the world, to develop patented software that accurately measures language ability across 4 skills and provides detailed diagnostics on test performance.

Many schools and teachers have implemented Pearson's courseware and assessment. They now have better visibility on their students' progression which eventually helped them to drive better outcomes. Learn more about their stories below.

We have an expanding programme of collaboration with external researchers in universities all over the world. Our Technical Advisory Group comprises experts from language testing, psychometrics and teaching who provide feedback, advice and critical assessment.
The independent group of experts guides the work of Pearson English in developing the Global Scale of English and the GSE Learning Objectives. They also have oversight of the Pearson English suite of English language tests.
