What is PISA?

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is the world’s largest international study of education systems, developed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Every three years, PISA tests 15-year-old pupils from all over the world in science, mathematics and reading. By participating in PISA25 your school is contributing to improvements to education in the UK and beyond. More information can be found on the OECD’s PISA website.

What do we need to do?

The PISA assessment includes:

An onscreen assessment for pupils

Assessing competency in science, reading and mathematics.

A background questionnaire for pupils

Asking about their characteristics, school and learning experiences.

A school questionnaire for the headteachers/principals

Asking about the context of their school, staff and pupils.

No prior preparation or work is required by pupils to be able to complete the assessment.

"Pupils found the PISA process interesting and straightforward to complete. The staff, pupils and parents were pleased to support PISA with their important work within the education sector." - School participating in PISA Field Trial 2024.

What are the benefits of PISA?

Participating in PISA offers a range of benefits for schools, for pupils and for education in the UK. You will be:

  • Contributing to a study that helps us better understand our education system
  • Providing pupils with the experience of representing their country in an international study and the opportunity to practise external assessment skills in an interesting and innovative ‘low stakes’ online assessment.

To thank you for your time, you will receive an administration payment direct to your school.
