Flow of Lymph

Lymph originates as interstitial fluid, enters lymphatic capillaries, passes through collecting lymphatic vessels, lymphatic trunks, and ducts, and finally drains into the brachiocephalic veins.

  • Sequence: Interstitial fluid → Lymphatic capillaries → Collecting lymphatic vessels → Lymphatic trunks → Lymphatic ducts → Subclavian veins → Brachiocephalic veins

Structure and Function of Lymphatic Capillaries

  • Structure: Thin-walled, blind-ended vessels located near blood capillaries.

  • Function: Absorb excess interstitial fluid, including proteins and debris, and transport it as lymph.

  • Lacteals: Specialized capillaries in the small intestine that absorb dietary fats.

Movement of Lymph

  • Lymph is propelled by skeletal muscle contraction, respiratory movements, and valves preventing backflow.

Lymphoid Cells

Main Types of Lymphoid Cells

  • Lymphocytes: B cells and T cells; responsible for adaptive immunity.

  • Supporting cells: Macrophages, dendritic cells, reticular cells; facilitate immune responses.

Immune System Cells

  • B lymphocytes (B cells): Produce antibodies; differentiate into plasma cells.
