Mitosis

Mitosis is the process by which a eukaryotic cell divides to produce two genetically identical daughter cells. It is essential for growth, repair, and asexual reproduction in multicellular organisms. Mitosis consists of several distinct phases:

  • Prophase: - Longest phase in mitosis. - Chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes. - Nuclear membrane breaks down. - Centrioles (in animal cells) move to opposite poles of the cell. - Spindle fibers begin to form from the centrioles. Example: A cell in prophase shows chromosomes becoming visible and the nuclear envelope disintegrating.

  • Metaphase: - Spindle fibers attach to the centromeres of chromosomes. - Chromosomes align at the metaphase plate, an imaginary line at the center of the cell. Example: Chromosomes are lined up in the middle of the cell, ready to be separated.

  • Anaphase: - Spindle fibers shorten, pulling apart the sister chromatids to opposite poles. - By the end of anaphase, each side of the cell has a complete set of chromosomes. Example: Sister chromatids are visibly moving toward opposite ends of the cell.

  • Telophase: - Chromosomes uncoil back into chromatin. - Nuclear membranes reform around the two sets of DNA. - Spindle fibers break down. Example: Two new nuclei are forming at opposite ends of the cell.

Cytokinesis

Cytokinesis is the division of the cytoplasm, which occurs after mitosis and results in two separate daughter cells. The process differs between animal and plant cells:

  • Animal Cells: - Cytoplasm divides by a process called cleavage furrow formation. - The cell membrane pinches inwards until the cell splits in two. Example: The cell membrane constricts at the center, forming two cells.

  • Plant Cells: - A cell plate forms between the two nuclei. - The cell plate develops into a new cell wall, separating the two daughter cells. Example: Vesicles fuse at the center to form the cell plate, which becomes the new cell wall.
