Cell Nucleus and Ribosomes
Nucleus
The nucleus is a membrane-bound organelle found in eukaryotic cells. It serves as the control center of the cell, housing genetic material and coordinating cellular activities such as growth, metabolism, and reproduction.
Function: Contains the cell's DNA and is responsible for gene expression and regulation.
Structure: Surrounded by a double membrane called the nuclear envelope.
Nucleolus
The nucleolus is a dense region within the nucleus where ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is synthesized and ribosome assembly begins.
Function: Produces rRNA and assembles ribosomal subunits.
Location: Found inside the nucleus.
Nuclear Membrane (Envelope)
The nuclear membrane (or nuclear envelope) is a double-layered structure that encloses the nucleus, separating it from the cytoplasm.
Function: Protects the genetic material and regulates the movement of molecules in and out of the nucleus.
Structure: Composed of two lipid bilayers with nuclear pores.
Nuclear Pores
Nuclear pores are large protein complexes that span the nuclear envelope, allowing the transport of molecules between the nucleus and cytoplasm.
Function: Permit the passage of RNA and ribosomal subunits out of the nucleus and the import of proteins and other molecules into the nucleus.
Ribosomes
Ribosomes are molecular machines responsible for protein synthesis. They can be found either free in the cytoplasm or bound to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER).
Structure: Composed of rRNA and proteins, consisting of two subunits (large and small).
Function: Translate messenger RNA (mRNA) into polypeptide chains (proteins).
Free vs. Bound Ribosomes
Ribosomes exist in two forms within the cell, each with distinct roles:
