Question 1

Which of the following best describes Darwin's concept of 'descent with modification'?

Accepted Answer

Species share a common ancestor and accumulate changes over generations due to mutation, meiosis, and random fertilization.

Question 2

Which of the following is NOT a misconception about evolution?

Accepted Answer

Evolution is a population-level phenomenon, not an individual-level process.

Question 3

A population of beetles is exposed to a new pesticide. After several generations, most beetles are resistant. Which process best explains this change?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection, because resistant beetles survive and reproduce more successfully.

Question 4

Which of the following is an example of a vestigial trait in humans?

Accepted Answer

The appendix, which has lost most of its original function.

Question 5

Which of the following equations represents the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for a gene with two alleles, $$p$$ and $$q$$?

Accepted Answer

$$p^2 + 2pq$$ + $$q^2 = 1$

Question 6

Which of the following is a post-zygotic reproductive barrier?

Accepted Answer

Hybrid sterility

Question 7

A small group of finches colonizes a new island, and their allele frequencies differ from the original population. This is an example of:

Accepted Answer

Founder effect, a type of genetic drift

Question 8

Which of the following best explains why the biological species concept cannot be applied to fossil species?

Accepted Answer

Fossil species cannot be observed for reproductive isolation or production of viable offspring.

Question 9

Which process is most likely to maintain genetic diversity in a population despite natural selection?

Accepted Answer

Heterozygote advantage

Question 10

Which of the following is a correct comparison between allopatric and sympatric speciation?

Accepted Answer

Allopatric speciation involves geographic isolation, while sympatric speciation occurs without physical separation.

Question 11

Which of the following is an example of artificial selection?

Accepted Answer

Breeding dogs for specific coat colors over generations.

Question 12

Which of the following is a mechanism of genetic drift?

Accepted Answer

Bottleneck effect

Question 13

Which of the following best describes a fixed allele in a population?

Accepted Answer

An allele that is the only variant present at a genetic locus in the population.

Question 14

Which of the following is NOT a prezygotic reproductive barrier?

Accepted Answer

Hybrid breakdown

Question 15

Which of the following is a key difference between sexual selection and natural selection?

Accepted Answer

Sexual selection is driven by mate choice and competition for mates, while natural selection is driven by survival and reproductive success in the environment.

Question 16

Which of the following best explains why evolution does not create perfect organisms?

Accepted Answer

Evolution involves fitness trade-offs and is limited by historical constraints.

Question 17

In the haploid-diploid system, why do sisters in certain social insects (like bees) share, on average, 75% of their genes?

Accepted Answer

Because males are haploid and females are diploid, leading to increased genetic relatedness among sisters.

Question 18

Which of the following is an example of homoplasy?

Accepted Answer

Wings in bats and insects, which evolved independently.

Question 19

Which of the following is a limitation of the morphospecies concept?

Accepted Answer

It cannot distinguish cryptic species that look similar but are genetically distinct.

Question 20

Which of the following outcomes is possible when two previously isolated populations come back into contact?

Accepted Answer

Fusion, extinction, reinforcement of divergence, hybrid zone formation, or the creation of a new species.
