Question 1

Which of the following best defines evolution in the context of modern biology?

Accepted Answer

A change in the genetic composition of a population over successive generations.

Question 2

Which scientist's work on taxonomy and classification influenced Darwin by providing a framework for organizing biological diversity?

Accepted Answer

Carl Linnaeus

Question 3

How did Charles Lyell's theory of uniformitarianism contribute to Darwin's theory of evolution?

Accepted Answer

It argued that the same geological processes observed today have operated over long periods, implying an ancient Earth.

Question 4

Which of the following statements about Jean Baptiste Lamarck's model for evolution is correct?

Accepted Answer

He proposed that acquired characteristics could be inherited by offspring.

Question 5

Why has modern biology rejected Lamarck’s theory of inheritance of acquired characteristics?

Accepted Answer

Because acquired traits do not alter the DNA sequence in gametes.

Question 6

Which of the following best describes the principle of gradualism?

Accepted Answer

Geological and biological changes occur slowly and continuously over long periods.

Question 7

Thomas Malthus influenced Darwin by suggesting that:

Accepted Answer

Populations grow faster than the resources they depend on, leading to competition.

Question 8

Which of the following is an example of adaptation?

Accepted Answer

A population of insects developing resistance to a pesticide over several generations.

Question 9

What are the two major observations Darwin made in The Origin of Species concerning the Earth's biota?

Accepted Answer

Members of a population often vary in their inherited traits, and all species can produce more offspring than the environment can support.

Question 10

Which of the following best explains Darwin's principle of 'descent with modification'?

Accepted Answer

Species change over time, giving rise to new species that share a common ancestor.

Question 11

Artificial selection differs from natural selection in that:

Accepted Answer

Artificial selection is driven by human choices, while natural selection is driven by environmental pressures.

Question 12

Which of the following scenarios best illustrates natural selection?

Accepted Answer

A population of moths becoming darker in color due to increased pollution, making them less visible to predators.

Question 13

Which scientist's work on extinction and the fossil record influenced Darwin's understanding of the history of life?

Accepted Answer

Georges Cuvier

Question 14

Which of the following equations best represents the concept of exponential population growth as discussed by Malthus?

Accepted Answer

$$N_t = N_0$ e$$^{rt}$$

Question 15

A scientist observes that a certain species of fish has developed a thicker layer of scales in a polluted river over several generations. Which evolutionary concept does this best illustrate?

Accepted Answer

Adaptation through natural selection

Question 16

Which of the following statements about the principle of common descent is correct?

Accepted Answer

All living organisms share a common ancestor.

Question 17

Which of the following is NOT a reason why modern biology rejects Lamarck’s theory?

Accepted Answer

Modern genetics supports the inheritance of acquired characteristics.

Question 18

Which of the following best describes the difference between gradualism and catastrophism?

Accepted Answer

Gradualism suggests slow, continuous change; catastrophism suggests change occurs through sudden, short-lived events.

Question 19

A farmer breeds only the largest pigs in his herd. Over several generations, the average size of pigs increases. This is an example of:

Accepted Answer

Artificial selection

Question 20

Which of the following best summarizes Darwin’s two major observations in The Origin of Species?

Accepted Answer

Members of a population vary in their traits; more offspring are produced than can survive.
