Question 1

Which of the following is a distinguishing characteristic of the reptile clade that allowed them to adapt successfully to terrestrial environments?

Accepted Answer

Development of the amniotic egg with a shell

Question 2

Why are birds included within the reptile clade according to modern phylogenetic classification?

Accepted Answer

Birds are more closely related to crocodilians and dinosaurs than to other vertebrates

Question 3

Which of the following best distinguishes lepidosaurs from archosaurs?

Accepted Answer

Lepidosaurs include lizards and snakes, while archosaurs include crocodilians and birds

Question 4

Which evidence most strongly supports the hypothesis that birds evolved from theropod dinosaurs?

Accepted Answer

Fossils show that both have hollow bones and similar limb structures

Question 5

What is the evolutionary significance of Archaeopteryx?

Accepted Answer

It provides a transitional fossil showing both dinosaur and bird characteristics

Question 6

Which of the following is NOT a distinguishing characteristic of mammals?

Accepted Answer

Laying eggs with leathery shells

Question 7

Which statement correctly distinguishes between monotreme, marsupial, and eutherian mammals?

Accepted Answer

Monotremes lay eggs, marsupials give birth to undeveloped young, and eutherians have a complex placenta

Question 8

During the Cretaceous and early Tertiary periods, mammals underwent adaptive radiation. What does this mean?

Accepted Answer

Mammals evolved to fill a wide variety of ecological niches after the extinction of dinosaurs

Question 9

Which of the following is an example of convergent evolution between marsupials and placental mammals?

Accepted Answer

The evolution of the marsupial sugar glider and the placental flying squirrel, both adapted for gliding

Question 10

A scientist discovers a fossil with feathers, a wishbone, and teeth. Which conclusion is best supported by this evidence?

Accepted Answer

The fossil is a transitional form between non-avian dinosaurs and birds, similar to Archaeopteryx

Question 11

Which of the following best explains why marsupial and placental mammals on different continents often resemble each other in form and function?

Accepted Answer

Convergent evolution led to similar adaptations in response to similar environmental pressures

Question 12

Which feature is shared by all members of the archosaur clade?

Accepted Answer

Openings in the skull in front of the eyes (antorbital fenestrae)

Question 13

Which of the following is a correct example of adaptive radiation in mammals?

Accepted Answer

The evolution of whales, bats, and primates from a common mammalian ancestor

Question 14

Which of the following statements about monotremes is true?

Accepted Answer

They lay eggs and produce milk

Question 15

A biologist compares the skulls of a marsupial wolf (Thylacinus) and a placental wolf (Canis lupus) and finds many similarities. What is the best explanation for these similarities?

Accepted Answer

They independently evolved similar traits due to occupying similar ecological niches

Question 16

Which of the following is NOT evidence supporting the evolutionary link between birds and theropod dinosaurs?

Accepted Answer

Development of mammary glands

Question 17

Which adaptation is unique to mammals among vertebrates?

Accepted Answer

Production of milk by mammary glands

Question 18

Which of the following best describes the process of convergent evolution?

Accepted Answer

Two unrelated species evolve similar traits due to similar environmental pressures

Question 19

Which of the following is a characteristic shared by all mammals?

Accepted Answer

Presence of hair or fur at some stage of life

Question 20

Which of the following best explains why the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs led to the adaptive radiation of mammals?

Accepted Answer

It eliminated many competitors and predators, allowing mammals to diversify into new ecological roles
