  • Alkyl Group

    A group formed by removing a hydrogen from an alkane, changing the suffix from -ane to -yl.
  • Methane

    A saturated hydrocarbon with the formula CH4, consisting of one carbon atom bonded to four hydrogen atoms.
  • Methyl

    A group derived from methane by removing one hydrogen, represented as CH3.
  • Methylene

    A group represented as CH2, where the carbon is bonded to two hydrogens and two other atoms or groups.
  • Methyne

    A group represented as CH, where the carbon is bonded to three other atoms or groups.
  • Ethyl

    A group derived from ethane by removing one hydrogen, represented as C2H5.
  • Propyl

    A group derived from propane by removing one hydrogen from an end carbon, represented as C3H7.
  • Isopropyl

    A group derived from propane by removing one hydrogen from the middle carbon, represented as (CH3)2CH.
  • Butyl

    A group derived from butane by removing one hydrogen from an end carbon, represented as C4H9.
  • Sec-butyl

    A group derived from butane by removing one hydrogen from a secondary carbon, represented as CH3CH(CH3)CH2.
  • Isobutyl

    A group derived from isobutane by removing one hydrogen from an end carbon, represented as (CH3)2CHCH2.
  • Tert-butyl

    A group derived from isobutane by removing one hydrogen from a tertiary carbon, represented as (CH3)3C.
  • Primary Carbon

    A carbon atom bonded to only one other carbon atom.
  • Secondary Carbon

    A carbon atom bonded to two other carbon atoms.
  • Tertiary Carbon

    A carbon atom bonded to three other carbon atoms.
