  • Transition Metals: Elements found in Groups 3 to 12, characterized by their ability to form variable oxidation states and colored compounds.

  • Representative Elements: Elements in Groups 1, 2, and 13 to 18, also known as main group elements. They display a wide range of chemical and physical properties.

Transition Metals

Transition metals are located in the central block of the periodic table (Groups 3-12). They are sometimes referred to as the d-block elements.

  • Exhibit variable oxidation states.

  • Often form colored compounds.

  • Good conductors of heat and electricity.

  • Examples: Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Silver (Ag), Gold (Au).

Inner transition metals include the lanthanides and actinides, which are typically shown below the main body of the periodic table.

Representative Elements

Representative elements are found in Groups 1, 2, and 13-18. They are also called main group elements and include metals, nonmetals, and metalloids.

  • Display a wide variety of chemical behaviors.

  • Group 1: Alkali metals (e.g., Na, K).

  • Group 2: Alkaline earth metals (e.g., Mg, Ca).

  • Groups 13-18: Include elements such as Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar.
