Question 1

Which of the following best explains why breathing is essential for humans?

Accepted Answer

It provides oxygen necessary for cellular respiration, which produces ATP for energy.

Question 2

During inhalation, which of the following accurately describes the change in pressure inside the lungs?

Accepted Answer

The pressure inside the lungs decreases below atmospheric pressure.

Question 3

Which structure of the upper respiratory system is primarily responsible for filtering, warming, and humidifying incoming air?

Accepted Answer

Nasal cavity

Question 4

What is the main function of the alveoli in the lower respiratory system?

Accepted Answer

To facilitate gas exchange between air and blood.

Question 5

Which of the following best describes the role of intercostal muscles during inhalation?

Accepted Answer

They contract, elevating the rib cage and increasing thoracic volume.

Question 6

During expiration, which of the following mechanical events occurs?

Accepted Answer

The diaphragm relaxes and moves upward.

Question 7

Which sequence correctly represents the flow of oxygen-rich blood through the heart?

Accepted Answer

Pulmonary vein → left atrium → left ventricle → aorta

Question 8

A patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is likely to experience which of the following?

Accepted Answer

Decreased airflow due to narrowed airways and damaged alveoli.

Question 9

Which equation best represents the relationship between pressure, volume, and temperature in the lungs during breathing?

Accepted Answer

$$P V = n R T$$

Question 10

If a person inhales deeply, which of the following changes occurs in the thoracic cavity?

Accepted Answer

The thoracic cavity volume increases, causing air to rush in.

Question 11

Which of the following is a primary function of the larynx?

Accepted Answer

Production of sound and protection of the lower airway

Question 12

A person with asthma experiences difficulty breathing primarily because:

Accepted Answer

The bronchioles constrict, reducing airflow.

Question 13

Which of the following best describes the mechanics of inspiration?

Accepted Answer

Diaphragm contracts, thoracic volume increases, lung pressure decreases, air enters.

Question 14

Which of the following is NOT a function of the trachea?

Accepted Answer

Facilitating gas exchange

Question 15

A person with pneumonia may have impaired gas exchange because:

Accepted Answer

Fluid accumulation in alveoli reduces surface area for gas exchange.

Question 16

Which of the following best explains why breathing is significant for most animals?

Accepted Answer

It provides oxygen for cellular respiration, which is essential for energy production.

Question 17

Which of the following is a plausible consequence of damage to the cilia lining the trachea?

Accepted Answer

Reduced ability to filter and clear particles from the airway.

Question 18

If the left ventricle fails to pump effectively, which of the following is most likely to occur?

Accepted Answer

Oxygen-rich blood will not be efficiently delivered to systemic tissues.

Question 19

Which of the following best describes the function of the pharynx in the upper respiratory system?

Accepted Answer

Acts as a passageway for both air and food.

Question 20

A person is exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide. Which of the following best explains the physiological effect?
