Typical seaside rocks are composed of silicates, which are compounds made from silicon and oxygen atoms.

The air may also contain substances called amines, which are organic compounds derived from ammonia and often have strong odors.
For example, triethylamine is an amine emitted by decaying fish and contributes to the characteristic fishy smell at the seaside.
