Introduction to Cell Biology
Historical Development of Cell Theory
The study of cells began with the invention and improvement of microscopes, which allowed scientists to observe the microscopic world. Early observations laid the foundation for modern cell biology.
Robert Hooke (1665): Used a crude microscope to examine thin slices of cork from an oak tree. He observed small compartments, which he called cellulae (Latin for "little rooms"), giving rise to the term "cell."
Anton van Leeuwenhoek: Improved microscope design and observed living cells in blood, sperm, and pond water, expanding our understanding of cellular diversity.
These discoveries led to the development of the cell theory, which states:
All living things are composed of cells.
All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
Example: Modern cell biology explores the cellular basis of life, including the structure, function, and diversity of cells.
