Question 1

Which of the following best describes Darwin's concept of 'descent with modification'?

Accepted Answer

Species descend from a common ancestor and accumulate differences over generations, resulting in the diversity of life.

Question 2

Which scientist is credited with developing the binomial system for naming species, such as Homo sapiens?

Accepted Answer

Carolus Linnaeus

Question 3

According to Darwin, what is the primary mechanism by which evolution occurs?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection

Question 4

Which of the following is an example of artificial selection?

Accepted Answer

Humans breeding dogs for specific traits such as size or temperament

Question 5

What is the significance of the fossil record in understanding evolution?

Accepted Answer

It documents the pattern of evolution, including the origins and extinction of species.

Question 6

Which of the following best explains why MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) evolved resistance to antibiotics?

Accepted Answer

Natural selection favored bacteria with pre-existing resistance genes when exposed to antibiotics.

Question 7

Which of the following is a key feature of natural selection?

Accepted Answer

Populations evolve over time as the frequency of favorable traits increases.

Question 8

Which concept is illustrated by the similarity in bone structure among the forelimbs of mammals, despite their different functions?

Accepted Answer

Homology

Question 9

A population of beetles has two color morphs: red and black. If birds preferentially eat red beetles, what will likely happen to the population over time?

Accepted Answer

The frequency of black beetles will increase due to natural selection.

Question 10

Which of the following is NOT a type of evidence supporting evolution?

Accepted Answer

The arrangement of species according to the scala naturae

Question 11

Which equation best represents the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for allele frequencies in a population?

Accepted Answer

$$p^2 + 2pq$$ + $$q^2 = 1$

Question 12

Which scenario best illustrates gene flow?

Accepted Answer

A population of birds migrates to a new area and breeds with the local population, introducing new alleles.

Question 13

Which of the following is an example of a vestigial structure?

Accepted Answer

The pelvis and leg bones found in some snakes

Question 14

Which process is responsible for the evolution of similar traits in distantly related groups, such as sugar gliders and flying squirrels?

Accepted Answer

Convergent evolution

Question 15

Which of the following statements about Lamarck's hypothesis of evolution is correct?

Accepted Answer

It suggested that acquired characteristics could be inherited by offspring.

Question 16

A population of bacteria is exposed to an antibiotic. Some bacteria survive due to a mutation that allows them to resist the antibiotic. What is the most likely outcome?

Accepted Answer

The surviving bacteria will reproduce, increasing the frequency of the resistance allele in the population.

Question 17

Which of the following best describes biogeography?

Accepted Answer

The scientific study of the geographic distribution of species.

Question 18

Which of the following is a direct observation of evolutionary change?

Accepted Answer

The evolution of drug-resistant bacteria in hospitals.

Question 19

Which of the following statements about scientific theories is true?

Accepted Answer

A scientific theory accounts for many observations and is supported by continual experimentation.

Question 20

If a population of finches on the Galápagos Islands evolves different beak shapes to exploit different food sources, this is an example of:

Accepted Answer

Descent with modification by natural selection
