Accepted Answer

$$6\ CO_2$ + 12\ H_2O + 	ext{Light energy}
ightarrow C_6H_{12}O_6$ + 6\ O_2$ + 6\ H_2O$$

Question 3

Which structure within the chloroplast is primarily responsible for the light reactions of photosynthesis?

Accepted Answer

Thylakoid membrane

Question 4

What is the main photosynthetic pigment found in plants, and what is its role?

Accepted Answer

Chlorophyll a; absorbs violet-blue and red light for photosynthesis

Question 5

During the light reactions, what is the fate of electrons released from the splitting of water?

Accepted Answer

They are transferred to NADP+ to form NADPH

Question 6

Which of the following best explains why leaves appear green?

Accepted Answer

Chlorophyll reflects and transmits green light while absorbing other wavelengths

Question 7

What is the relationship between an absorption spectrum and an action spectrum in photosynthesis?

Accepted Answer

The absorption spectrum shows the wavelengths absorbed by pigments, while the action spectrum shows the effectiveness of those wavelengths in driving photosynthesis

Question 8

Which enzyme is responsible for carbon fixation in the Calvin cycle, and what is its significance?

Accepted Answer

Rubisco; catalyzes the incorporation of CO2 into organic molecules

Question 9

Which of the following is a major consequence of photorespiration in C3 plants?

Accepted Answer

Consumption of O2 and release of CO2 without producing ATP or sugar

Question 10

How do C4 plants minimize photorespiration compared to C3 plants?

Accepted Answer

By incorporating CO2 into four-carbon compounds in mesophyll cells using PEP carboxylase

Question 11

Which of the following statements about CAM plants is correct?

Accepted Answer

CAM plants fix CO2 at night and release it during the day for the Calvin cycle

Question 12

Which process is responsible for ATP production in both mitochondria and chloroplasts, and what is the main difference in their energy sources?

Accepted Answer

Chemiosmosis; mitochondria use chemical energy from food, chloroplasts use light energy

Question 13

In the linear electron flow of the light reactions, what is the sequence of electron transfer?

Accepted Answer

Photosystem II → Electron transport chain → Photosystem I → NADP+

Question 14

Which of the following is NOT a product of the light reactions of photosynthesis?

Accepted Answer

Glucose

Question 15

What is the role of ATP and NADPH in the Calvin cycle?

Accepted Answer

ATP provides energy and NADPH provides reducing power for the synthesis of G3P

Question 16

Which pigment protects chlorophyll from excessive light damage?

Accepted Answer

Carotenoids

Question 17

A plant is exposed to only green light. What would you expect regarding its rate of photosynthesis?

Accepted Answer

Low rate, because green light is mostly reflected and not absorbed

Question 18

Which of the following best describes the spatial organization of chemiosmosis in chloroplasts?

Accepted Answer

Protons are pumped into the thylakoid space and diffuse back into the stroma

Question 19

Which adaptation allows C4 and CAM plants to thrive in hot, arid climates?

Accepted Answer

Alternative carbon fixation pathways that minimize water loss and photorespiration
