Cells and Tissues

Introduction to Cells and Tissues

Cells and tissues are fundamental concepts in anatomy and physiology, forming the basis for understanding the structure and function of the human body. This section introduces the essential roles of cells and tissues in maintaining life.

  • Cells carry out all chemical activities necessary to sustain life.

  • Cells are the building blocks of all living things.

  • Tissues are groups of cells that are similar in structure and function.

Additional info: The study of tissues is called histology. There are four primary tissue types in the human body: epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue.

Anatomy of the Cell

General Structure of Cells

Although cells vary in size, shape, and function, they share several general structural features. Understanding these components is essential for studying cellular function and specialization.

  • Cells are not all the same, but most share common structures.

  • Cells are organized into three main parts:

    1. Nucleus

    2. Cytoplasm

    3. Plasma membrane

Nucleus: The control center of the cell, containing genetic material (DNA).

Cytoplasm: The fluid region outside the nucleus and inside the plasma membrane, containing organelles.

Plasma membrane: The outer boundary of the cell, regulating the movement of substances in and out.

Additional info: The plasma membrane is composed primarily of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins, cholesterol, and carbohydrates.

Key Functions of Cell Components

  • Nucleus: Directs cellular activities and stores hereditary information.

  • Cytoplasm: Site of most cellular processes, including metabolism and organelle function.

  • Plasma membrane: Maintains homeostasis by controlling the internal environment of the cell.

Example: Red Blood Cell vs. Nerve Cell

  • Red blood cells are specialized for oxygen transport and lack a nucleus at maturity.

  • Nerve cells (neurons) have long extensions for transmitting electrical signals.

Additional info: The diversity in cell structure reflects the diversity in cell function throughout the body.
