Functions of the Skeletal System

Overview of the Skeletal System

The skeletal system is a complex framework that provides structure and support to the human body. It consists of bones, cartilages, ligaments, and other connective tissues that stabilize and interconnect the bones.

  • Structural support: Provides the rigid framework for the body and maintains its shape.

  • Storage of minerals and lipids: Bones store essential minerals such as calcium and phosphorus, as well as lipids in yellow bone marrow.

  • Blood cell production: Red bone marrow produces red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets (a process called hematopoiesis).

  • Protection: Bones protect vital organs (e.g., skull protects the brain, rib cage protects the heart and lungs).

  • Leverage for movement: Bones act as levers that muscles pull on to produce movement.

Classification of Bones by Shape

Types of Bones

Bones are classified according to their shapes, which relate to their functions and locations in the body.

  • Sutural bones (Wormian bones):

    • Very small, irregular, flat bones found between the flat bones of the skull, within sutures.

    • Not always present in all individuals.

  • Irregular bones:

    • Have complex shapes that do not fit other categories.

    • Examples: vertebrae, pelvic bones.

  • Short bones:

    • Cube-shaped bones.

    • Examples: carpal bones (wrist), tarsal bones (ankle).

  • Flat bones:

    • Thin bones with parallel surfaces.

    • Examples: bones of the skull roof, sternum, ribs, scapulae.

  • Long bones:

    • Long and slender bones found in the limbs.

    • Examples: humerus, femur, bones of arms, legs, palms, soles, fingers, and toes.

  • Sesamoid bones:

    • Small, round, and flat bones found within tendons near joints (e.g., knees, hands, feet).

    • Example: patella (kneecap).

    • Location and number can vary between individuals.

Long

Long, slender

Humerus, femur, phalanges

Sesamoid

Small, round, flat; within tendons

Patella

Examples and Applications

  • Flat bones (e.g., parietal bone) provide protection and extensive surface area for muscle attachment.

  • Long bones (e.g., femur) function as levers for movement and support body weight.

  • Sesamoid bones (e.g., patella) protect tendons from stress and wear.

Additional info: The classification of bones by shape is fundamental for understanding their function and clinical significance, such as in the diagnosis of fractures or bone diseases.
