Concentration Gradients

Definition and Principles

A concentration gradient refers to the difference in the concentration of a substance between two areas. This concept is fundamental in understanding how substances move within biological systems.

  • Concentration Gradient: The difference in the amount of a substance between two regions.

  • Movement: Molecules naturally move down their concentration gradient, from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.

  • Against Gradient: Movement against the gradient (from low to high concentration) requires energy input.

Example: The diagram below illustrates how particles move from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration, with energy required to move against the gradient.

Diagram Description

  • Left side: High concentration of particles, energy is released as particles move down the gradient.

  • Right side: Low concentration of particles, energy is required to move particles against the gradient.

Diffusion

Definition and Mechanism

Diffusion is the movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. This process is passive and does not require energy input.

  • Direction: Molecules move down their concentration gradient (from high to low concentration).

  • Equilibrium: Diffusion continues until equilibrium is reached, meaning the concentration is equal throughout the system.

Example: Diffusion of a dye in water. When drops of red dye are added to water, the dye molecules spread out from the area of high concentration (where the drops were added) to areas of lower concentration until the color is evenly distributed.

Diagram Description

  • Initial: Drops of red dye create a high concentration in one area.

  • Over time: Dye molecules move throughout the water, spreading out.

  • Equilibrium: Dye is evenly distributed, and no net movement occurs.

Practice Question

Application of Diffusion Principles

  • Question: Which of the following statements about diffusion is true?

  • Answer: It is a process where water moves across a semi-permeable membrane to a region of high solute concentration.

Key Terms and Concepts

  • Concentration Gradient: The difference in concentration of a substance between two areas.

  • Diffusion: The passive movement of molecules from high to low concentration.

  • Equilibrium: The state where concentrations are equal throughout a system.

  • Semi-permeable Membrane: A membrane that allows certain molecules to pass through while blocking others.
