Question 1

Which of the following best describes the process used for most influenza vaccine production in the United States?

Accepted Answer

The virus is grown in chicken eggs or cell culture, then inactivated and purified.

Question 2

Why is a new influenza vaccine needed each flu season?

Accepted Answer

The influenza virus mutates rapidly, requiring updated vaccines to match circulating strains.

Question 3

A multivalent influenza vaccine typically contains:

Accepted Answer

Three or four different strains of influenza virus.

Question 4

Which equation best represents the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine in a population, given that it is 70-90% effective in healthy adults?

Accepted Answer

If $$N is $$the number of vaccinated individuals, then the number protected is $$P = N imes E$$, where $$E is $$the effectiveness rate (e.g., $$0.7 to$$ $$0.9).$$

Question 5

Which group should NOT receive the standard egg-based influenza vaccine?

Accepted Answer

Individuals with severe egg allergies.

Question 6

What is the recommended timing for receiving the influenza vaccine for optimal protection?

Accepted Answer

By October, before the peak flu season.

Question 7

Which of the following statements about influenza vaccine effectiveness is TRUE?

Accepted Answer

It takes about 2 weeks after vaccination for immunity to develop.

Question 8

If a patient is at high risk for severe influenza (e.g., pregnant, elderly, chronic illness), what additional intervention is recommended besides vaccination?

Accepted Answer

Antiviral medications should be considered.

Question 9

Based on CDC estimates, what is the approximate annual number of flu-related deaths in the U.S. during a 'normal' year?

Accepted Answer

About 36,000 deaths.

Question 10

Which of the following best explains why vaccinating children against influenza helps protect others in the community?

Accepted Answer

Children are major spreaders of influenza, so reducing their infection rate lowers community transmission.

Question 11

Which of the following is a plausible reason for the CDC to conduct full genetic sequencing on about 7,000 flu viruses each year?

Accepted Answer

To monitor mutations and select the most appropriate strains for next season's vaccine.

Question 12

If the CDC prepares as many as 50 viruses for possible use in vaccine production, but only 3 or 4 are selected, what is the probability of a single virus being chosen, assuming equal likelihood?

Accepted Answer

If $$n is $$the number of viruses prepared and $$k is $$the number selected, then $$P = \frac{k}{n}. $$For $$k=4$$, $$n=50$$, $$P = \frac{4}{50} = 0.08.$$

Question 13

Which of the following is a real-world implication of the CDC's surveillance of influenza activity across the U.S.?

Accepted Answer

It helps public health officials target vaccination campaigns and allocate resources during outbreaks.

Question 14

According to historical data, which month most frequently marks the peak of flu activity in the U.S.?

Accepted Answer

February

Question 15

If the CDC estimates between 44 million and 76 million flu illnesses in a season, what is the average number of illnesses?

Accepted Answer

The average is $$\frac{44,000,000 + 76,000,000}{2} = 60,000,000.$$

Question 16

Which of the following best describes the relationship between pneumonia, influenza, and COVID-19 mortality as shown in CDC surveillance graphs?

Accepted Answer

Mortality rates for all three diseases tend to rise during winter months, often exceeding epidemic thresholds.

Question 17

A patient receives both the COVID-19 and influenza vaccines at the same time. What is the expected outcome?

Accepted Answer

It is safe and recommended; both vaccines can be administered simultaneously.

Question 18

If a state reports 'widespread' influenza activity, what does this indicate?

Accepted Answer

Influenza is present in most regions of the state.

Question 19

Which of the following is a plausible reason for lower vaccine effectiveness in elderly populations?

Accepted Answer

The immune response in elderly individuals is often weaker, reducing vaccine effectiveness.
