Question 1

Which of the following is NOT a primary function of the kidneys?

Accepted Answer

Regulation of body temperature

Question 2

The nephron is considered the functional unit of the kidney. Which of the following correctly describes the flow of blood through the nephron's vascular elements?

Accepted Answer

Afferent arteriole → glomerulus → efferent arteriole → peritubular capillaries/vasa recta

Question 3

Which part of the nephron is primarily responsible for the reabsorption of the majority of filtered solutes and water?

Accepted Answer

Proximal tubule

Question 4

A patient has a mean arterial blood pressure of 90 mm Hg. According to the concept of autoregulation, what would you expect to happen to their glomerular filtration rate (GFR)?

Accepted Answer

GFR will remain relatively constant

Question 5

Which of the following pressures opposes glomerular filtration?

Accepted Answer

Capsule fluid pressure

Question 6

If the afferent arteriole constricts, what is the expected effect on GFR, and why?

Accepted Answer

GFR decreases due to reduced blood flow into the glomerulus

Question 7

Which of the following best describes the process of secretion in the nephron?

Accepted Answer

Active movement of molecules from extracellular fluid into the nephron lumen

Question 8

A patient’s plasma glucose concentration exceeds the renal threshold. What is the most likely outcome?

Accepted Answer

Glucose will appear in the urine (glucosuria)

Question 9

Which equation correctly represents the calculation of net filtration pressure ($$P_{net}) in $$the glomerulus?

Accepted Answer

$$P_{net} = P_{GC} - \pi_{GC} - P_{BC}$$

Question 10

Which of the following substances is used as a clinical marker to measure glomerular filtration rate (GFR) because it is freely filtered and neither reabsorbed nor secreted?

Accepted Answer

Inulin

Question 11

A drug is secreted into the nephron by the organic anion transporter (OAT) system. If another drug that also uses OAT is administered, what is the likely effect?

Accepted Answer

Secretion of the first drug will decrease due to competition

Question 12

Which of the following best describes the role of the juxtaglomerular apparatus?

Accepted Answer

It regulates GFR through paracrine signaling and renin secretion

Question 13

Which of the following statements about micturition is correct?

Accepted Answer

It involves a spinal reflex that can be overridden by higher brain centers

Question 14

Which of the following is true regarding the osmolarity of filtrate as it passes through the nephron?

Accepted Answer

Filtrate is most dilute at the end of the loop of Henle

Question 15

Which of the following best explains why glucose appears in the urine of a diabetic patient?

Accepted Answer

The transport maximum for glucose reabsorption is exceeded

Question 16

Which of the following is a correct statement about renal clearance?

Accepted Answer

It is the volume of plasma cleared of a substance per unit time

Question 17

A patient is given a substance that is freely filtered, not reabsorbed, and not secreted. If the excretion rate of the substance is 100 mg/min and the plasma concentration is 2 mg/mL, what is the GFR?

Accepted Answer

$$GFR = \frac{100\ mg/min}{2\ mg/mL} = 50\ mL/min$$

Question 18

Which of the following best describes the paracellular pathway in renal reabsorption?

Accepted Answer

Substances pass through the cell–cell junctions between adjacent cells

Question 19

Which of the following is a direct effect of increased resistance in the efferent arteriole?

Accepted Answer

Increased glomerular filtration rate
