Which of the following is NOT a similarity between green algae and land plants?

Accepted Answer

Both lack cell walls

Question 4

Which of the following best describes the life cycle of Charophyceae (stoneworts)?

Accepted Answer

Zygotes are the only diploid stage, with no alternation of generations

Question 5

Lichens are stable associations between fungi and which of the following?

Accepted Answer

Green algae or cyanobacteria

Question 6

Which of the following adaptations was crucial for the transition of plants from aquatic to terrestrial environments?

Accepted Answer

Ability to thrive with tissues completely exposed to air

Question 7

Which lineage of green algae is known for forming extensive beds on lake bottoms and providing food for waterfowl?

Accepted Answer

Charophyceae (stoneworts)

Question 8

Which of the following statements about the reproduction of Ulvophyceae (sea lettuce) is correct?

Accepted Answer

Spores and gametes are motile, and male and female gametes look identical

Question 9

Which of the following is a real-world example of the importance of green algae in ecosystems?

Accepted Answer

They are the primary producers in freshwater habitats, supporting aquatic food webs.

Question 10

Which of the following best explains why the transition to land was a significant evolutionary event for plants?

Accepted Answer

It enabled plants to colonize new environments and diversify, transforming terrestrial ecosystems.

Question 11

Which of the following green algal groups is most likely to be found as a common endosymbiont in planktonic protists?

Accepted Answer

Green algae in general

Question 12

Which of the following is a plausible reason why green algae are heavily studied by biologists?

Accepted Answer

They are closely related to land plants and provide insight into plant evolution.

Question 13

Which of the following statements about the life cycle of Zygnematophyceae (conjugating algae) is correct?

Accepted Answer

Zygotes are the only diploid stage, and conjugation occurs between cells of adjacent filaments.

Question 14

Which of the following is NOT a major theme in the diversification of land plants?

Accepted Answer

Developing flagellated sperm for aquatic fertilization

Question 15

Which of the following best describes the ecological role of Ulvophyceae in marine and freshwater environments?

Accepted Answer

They are important primary producers.

Question 16

Which of the following is a critical detail supporting the hypothesis that land plants evolved from green algae?

Accepted Answer

Both groups have similar chloroplast structure and thylakoid arrangements.

Question 17

Which of the following is a real-life application of understanding green algae and land plant evolution?

Accepted Answer

Improving agricultural practices by understanding plant adaptation to terrestrial environments.

Question 18

Which of the following is a unique feature of the reproduction of Coleochaetophyceae?

Accepted Answer

Eggs are retained on the parent and nourished after fertilization.

Question 19

Which of the following best explains why lichens are important in terrestrial environments that lack soil?

Accepted Answer

They are stable associations that can colonize harsh environments and contribute to soil formation.
