Rough ER (RER): Studded with ribosomes on its cytoplasmic surface, giving it a 'rough' appearance. It is primarily involved in the synthesis of proteins that are either secreted from the cell, incorporated into the cell's plasma membrane, or sent to an organelle.
Smooth ER (SER): Lacks ribosomes and is involved in lipid synthesis, metabolism of carbohydrates, detoxification of drugs and poisons, and storage of calcium ions.
Example: Liver cells have abundant smooth ER to facilitate detoxification processes.
Functions of the ER
Protein Synthesis (Rough ER): Ribosomes attached to the rough ER synthesize proteins that are transported into the ER lumen for folding and modification.
Lipid Synthesis (Smooth ER): The smooth ER synthesizes phospholipids, steroids, and other lipids.
Detoxification (Smooth ER): Enzymes in the smooth ER add hydroxyl groups to drugs and toxins, increasing their solubility and facilitating excretion.
Membrane Production: The ER is a major site for the production of new membranes, which are distributed throughout the cell via vesicles.
Golgi Apparatus
Structure and Function
The Golgi apparatus is a series of flattened, membrane-bound sacs called cisternae. It acts as the cell's shipping and receiving center, modifying, sorting, and packaging proteins and lipids for delivery to targeted destinations.
Cis Face: The receiving side of the Golgi apparatus, located near the ER. Vesicles from the ER fuse with the cis face to deliver their contents.
Trans Face: The shipping side, where modified products are packaged into vesicles and sent to their final destinations.
Modification: The Golgi modifies proteins and lipids by adding carbohydrates (glycosylation) or other groups.
Sorting and Shipping: The Golgi sorts products and directs them to the correct cellular locations.
Example: The Golgi apparatus packages digestive enzymes into lysosomes or secretes glycoproteins outside the cell.
