Question 1

Which of the following best describes a scientific theory?

Accepted Answer

A synthesis of a large body of information that encompasses well-tested and verified hypotheses about certain aspects of the natural world.

Question 2

Which of the following is NOT a characteristic of a good scientific theory?

Accepted Answer

It can be proven right with 100% certainty.

Question 3

Which of the following best describes the scientific method?

Accepted Answer

A process where observation leads to theory, theory leads to predictions, and predictions are tested by new observations.

Question 4

Why are equations important in physics?

Accepted Answer

They provide expressions of relationships between concepts and serve as guides to thinking.

Question 5

Which of the following is an example of a scientific fact?

Accepted Answer

A close agreement by competent observers about the same phenomenon.

Question 6

A hypothesis is considered scientific if:

Accepted Answer

There is a test to prove it wrong.

Question 7

Which of the following best illustrates the integration of mathematics and science?

Accepted Answer

Using equations to express relationships between physical concepts.

Question 8

Which of the following statements about the scientific attitude is correct?

Accepted Answer

Scientists must accept experimental findings, even if they contradict their beliefs.

Question 9

Which of the following is the best example of a real-world application of the scientific method?

Accepted Answer

A medical researcher observes a new disease, proposes a theory about its cause, makes predictions, and tests them with experiments.

Question 10

Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth by:

Accepted Answer

Measuring the distance between two cities and the angle of the Sun's rays at noon.

Question 11

Which of the following is a correct statement about scientific laws?

Accepted Answer

They are statements that describe consistent natural phenomena and can be revised if new evidence arises.

Question 12

A student claims that the Earth is flat. Which scientific approach would best address this claim?

Accepted Answer

Gathering evidence from multiple observations, such as satellite images and ship navigation, to test the claim.

Question 13

Which of the following best describes the difference between a fact and a theory?

Accepted Answer

Facts are revisable data about the world; theories interpret facts.

Question 14

Which equation best represents the relationship between the circumference $$C$$ and diameter $$d of a $$circle, as used by Eratosthenes?

Accepted Answer

$$C = \pi d$$

Question 15

A scientist proposes a new hypothesis about the behavior of light. What must be true for this hypothesis to be considered scientific?

Accepted Answer

It must be possible to design an experiment that could prove the hypothesis wrong.

Question 16

Which of the following is an example of using equations as 'guides to thinking' in physics?

Accepted Answer

Using $$F = ma to $$analyze the effect of increasing mass on acceleration.

Question 17

Which of the following best demonstrates the willingness to admit error, a key aspect of the scientific attitude?

Accepted Answer

A scientist revises their theory after new experimental evidence contradicts their predictions.

Question 18

Which of the following is a multi-step application of the scientific method in a real-world context?

Accepted Answer

A climate scientist observes rising temperatures, hypothesizes increased greenhouse gases as the cause, predicts further warming, and tests predictions with climate models and data.
