Question 1

Which of the following best describes a frequency histogram?

Accepted Answer

A bar graph for quantitative data where bars touch and represent class frequencies.

Question 2

In a frequency histogram, what do the left and right endpoints of each bar represent?

Accepted Answer

The lower and upper cutpoints of the class.

Question 3

Why must the bars in a frequency histogram 'touch' each other?

Accepted Answer

To show that there are no gaps between classes in quantitative data.

Question 4

A relative frequency histogram differs from a frequency histogram in which way?

Accepted Answer

The vertical axis shows relative frequency instead of frequency.

Question 5

If a class in a frequency histogram has a frequency of zero, what should be done?

Accepted Answer

Draw a bar with height zero.

Question 6

Which of the following is true about the vertical axis of a frequency histogram?

Accepted Answer

It must always start at zero.

Question 7

Given the following frequencies for five classes: 3, 7, 12, 9, 4, what is the relative frequency for the third class?

Accepted Answer

$$ \frac{12}{35} $$

Question 8

When drawing a histogram for single-valued classes, where should the value for each class be placed?

Accepted Answer

At the middle of the corresponding bar.

Question 9

Which distribution shape is described as having one peak and being symmetric?

Accepted Answer

Bell-shaped curve

Question 10

A histogram of household sizes shows two distinct peaks. What is the best description of this distribution?

Accepted Answer

Bimodal

Question 11

If a distribution is right-skewed, which tail is longer?

Accepted Answer

The right tail

Question 12

Which of the following best describes a triangular distribution shape?

Accepted Answer

It has one peak and hits bottom suddenly on both sides.

Question 13

A frequency histogram is constructed for the ages of patients in a hospital. The bars are drawn with no gaps. What does this indicate about the data?

Accepted Answer

The data is quantitative and classes are continuous.

Question 14

If the largest relative frequency in a data set is $$0.36$$, which of the following is a suitable scale for the vertical axis of a relative frequency histogram?

Accepted Answer

Count by $$0.10 up to$$ $$0.40$$

Question 15

Which of the following is NOT a feature of a frequency histogram?

Accepted Answer

Bars are separated by gaps.

Question 16

A distribution of exam scores is left-skewed. What does this imply about the scores?

Accepted Answer

Most scores are high, with a few low scores.

Question 17

Which step should be done LAST when constructing a frequency histogram?

Accepted Answer

Draw the bars for each class.

Question 18

A frequency histogram for the number of children per household shows the following frequencies: 0 children (5), 1 child (12), 2 children (18), 3 children (9), 4 children (2). What is the relative frequency for households with 2 children?

Accepted Answer

$$ \frac{18}{46} $$

Question 19

Which of the following best describes a multimodal distribution?

Accepted Answer

A distribution with more than one peak.

Question 20

In a histogram, if the class midpoints are used instead of cutpoints, where are they placed?

Accepted Answer

At the bottom middle of each bar.
